Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway was born July 18, 1971 in Memphis, Tennessee.The nickname "Penny" came from Hardaway's grandmother calling him "Pretty" with a southern drawl.He was named Parade Magazine's national high school player of the year as a senior at Treadwell High School in Memphis, where he averaged 36.6 points, 10.1 rebound, 6.2 assists, 3.9 steals, and 2.8 blocks.

Hardaway majored in Education at Memphis State and achieved a 3.4 cumulative grade point average while playing basketball at the University of Memphis.The 1993 NBA draft saw Hardaway enter.
