If you grow asparagus yourself, it will be more delicious.Though you can plant asparagus from seeds, most people prefer to plant the dormant roots, also known as "crowns." They will provide stalks every spring for 20 to 30 years.
Step 1: Purchase asparagus crowns in the spring.
It's best to plant asparagus roots in the spring so that they have time to establish themselves before winter.You should buy the crowns before you plant.If you have to wait before planting, wrap the roots in sphagnum moss.sphagnum moss can be purchased at a nursery or online.One-year crowns are usually better than two- year crowns because they don't suffer as much from transplant shock.
Step 2: You can find a garden bed in a sunny place.
Asparagus can last for 20 years or more, so make sure you are willing to plant it there for a long time.Since asparagus doesn't grow well with over vegetables in the same bed, find a place where it can grow on its own.A raised garden bed is a good place to grow asparagus.Asparagus can grow in most places, but it does best in cooler climates.
Step 3: Add compost after removing all weeds.
The bed should be completely empty of weeds and roots before you start growing asparagus.If you think you have gotten all the weeds, check again.Once the bed is clear, add in a layer of compost.You can use soil mix if you don't have compost.
Step 4: A trench is 6 inches deep and 30 cm wide.
The length of the trench is dependent on how many asparagus crowns you want to plant.The crowns will be 46 cm apart.If you are digging more than one trench, make sure they are at least 3 feet apart.A shallow trench is 6 inches (15 cm) deep.
Step 5: Put a shovel in the ground every 18 inches.
Add a cup of mineral mix to each shovel and blend them together, asparagus will love this mix.You can shape the soil into a mound by mixing it.It's a good addition to the mix.
Step 6: The asparagus crown should be placed on top of each mound.
The crowns should be about 6 inches below the soil surface, and the roots should drape over the sides of the mound.
Step 7: The crowns have about 2 inches of soil on top.
It may seem odd to cover asparagus in soil, but it helps them grow stronger.After two weeks, add another inch of soil.Continue adding soil until it is a bit mounded.
Step 8: Add mulch and water.
The baby asparagus are fragile and need your care.New asparagus shoots don't have to compete with other plants because of the mulch and weeding.Asparagus needs a lot of water.In the first three years of growth, water the asparagus often.You will be able to harvest some of the tender shoots in two years.
