Levi's (/livaz/) is a brand of jeans manufactured by Levi Strauss & Co.After moving from Buttenheim, Germany to San Francisco, California to open a west coast branch of his brothers' New York dry goods business, it was founded in May 1854.The company's corporate headquarters is located in San Francisco, even though the corporation is registered in Delaware.[7]

The 90 Sacramento Street address in San Francisco was where the trading business of German immigrant Levi Strauss began.In 1858, the company was listed as Straus, Levi, etc.The 353 Sacramento Street Lobby is located on the current grounds of the San Francisco Directory and has a sales manager and his brother-in-law as its manager.10

Jacob Davis was a tailor in Reno, Nevada, who frequently purchased bolts of denim cloth from Levi Strauss & Co.'s wholesale house.After one of Davis's customers kept buying cloth to reinforce torn pants, he came up with the idea of using copper rivets to strengthen the points of strain, such as on the pocket corners and at the base of the button fly.Davis didn't have the money to purchase a patent, so he suggested that they go into business together.On May 20, 1873, the two men received a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.The company's jean design and advertisements incorporated the patented rivet.The manufacturing of denim overalls began in the 1870s, not during the California Gold Rush of 1849.Levi's first pair of jeans were created in the 1890s.There is a citation needed.

The working people of the western United States, such as cowboys, lumberjacks, and railroad workers, were the main buyers of modern jeans in the 1920s.Levi's jeans were first introduced to the East during the dude ranch craze of the 1930s, when vacationing Easterners returned home with tales of hard-wearing pants with rivets.Blue jeans were declared an essential commodity in World War II and only people engaged in defense work could buy them.

Between the 1950s and 1980s, Levi's jeans became popular among a wide range of youth groups.Levi's popular shrink-to-fit 501s were sold in a unique arrangement, with the indicated size referred to the size of the jeans prior to shrinking, and the shrinkage was substantial.These jeans are unshrunk, uniquely sized and still produced by the company.The crotch rivet and waist cinch were removed during World War II to conform to War Production Board requirements to conserve metal and were not replaced after the war.The back pocket rivets, which had been covered in denim since 1937, were removed due to complaints they scratched furniture.There are no comments at this time.

The more casual look of the 1960s and 1970s ushered in the "blue jeans craze" and served as a catalyst for the brand.New fashions and models, including stone-washed jeans, were added to the Levi's clothing line through the acquisition of Great Western Garment Company.The modern "stone washing" technique was introduced after the acquisition.Simpkins is credited with the company's record-paced expansion of its manufacturing capacity from 16 plants to more than 63 plants in the United States from 1964 to 1974 and 23 overseas.Levi's expansion was accomplished without a single unionized employee because of the strong stance on human rights and the use of "pay for performance" manufacturing from the sewing machine operator level up.Levi's plants were voted the best organized and cleanest textile facilities of their time.From a company with fifteen salespeople, two plants, and almost no business east of the Mississippi in 1946, the organization grew to include a sales force of more than 22,000, with 50 plants and offices in 35 countries.[16]

60 of the company's manufacturing plants were closed in the 1980's because of financial difficulties.[17]

The growth of the company was aided by the fact that the brand was sold mostly through department store chains.The CEO of Europe at the time was Jorge Bardina.The company tried to sell the division to relieve some of its debt.

Levi's faced competition from other brands and cheaper products from overseas and began to accelerate the pace of its US factory-closures.Some 3% of Levi's jeans sold annually with the Made in the USA label were shown in a scandal in 1991.The United States Department of Labor called it "slave-like" conditions.Most Levi's jeans are made outside the US, though a few of the higher-end, more expensive styles are still made here.

The largest fines in US labor history were paid by the Levi Strauss' Marianas subcontractor after they were accused of sub-minimum wages, seven-day work weeks with 12-hour shifts, poor living conditions, and other indignities.Levi Strauss claimed no knowledge of the offenses, severed ties to the Tan family, and instituted labor reforms and inspection practices in its offshore facilities.

The group Fuerza Unida was formed following the January 1990 closing of a San Antonio, Texas, Levi's plant, which resulted in the loss of 1,150 jobs to Costa Rica.Fuerza Unida staged hunger strikes and sit-ins in protest at the company's labor policies during the mid- and late 1990s.There are 22 and 23 words.

In February 1996, the company took on billions of dollars of debt to finance a series of stock purchases by family members.Levi's stock was not publicly traded at the time, but as of 2016 it was owned by descendants and relatives of Levi, who died in 1901.The bonds and shares of the company's Japanese subsidiary are traded publicly.

In June 1996, the company offered to pay its workers an unusual dividend of up to $750 million in six years' time, having halted an employee-stock plan at the time of the internal family buyout.The company failed to make cash-flow targets and did not pay worker dividends.[26]

A special line of "Signature" jeans and other clothes for exclusive sale in Walmart stores until 2006 was a close business collaboration between Levi's and Walmart.[28]

Over a six-year period from 2001 to 2002, Levi's filed nearly 100 trademark lawsuits against competitors.Levi's filed for a trademark on the back pocket double arcs stitching pattern in 1978.Levi's has successfully sued a number of companies.[29]

The company closed its Valencia Street plant in San Francisco in 2002.Levi's closed its last US factory in San Antonio at the end of 2003 ending 150 years of jeans made in the United States.Production of a few higher-end, more expensive styles of jeans resumed in the US several years later.[32]

Nine of the previous ten years saw Levi's sales decline.Its total annual sales were $3 billion less than during its peak performance in the mid 1990s.Rumors of a possible public stock offering were floated after more than two decades of family ownership.The media in July of 2007.36

In 2010, the company collaborated with Filson, an outdoor-goods manufacturer in Seattle, to produce a high-end line of jackets and workwear.[37]

On May 8, the San Francisco 49ers announced that they had purchased the naming rights to their new stadium in Santa Clara, California.Levi's agreed to pay $220.3 million to the city of Santa Clara and the 49ers over twenty years, with an option to extend the deal for another five years for around $75 million.40

Levi's Signature jeans are sold in over 100 countries.The company reported revenues of $4.7 billion.[39]

The "smart jacket" was developed in partnership with Google.Two years of collaboration resulted in a denim jacket set at $350.[42]

The ticker "LEVI" was used for Levi's debut on the New York Stock Exchange.The IPO price was above the target and the company was valued at over $6 billion.[42]

Levi's won the final judgement in Guangzhou, China.Since its registration in China in 2005, the "arcuate design on two pockets at the back of jeans" has been protected.Damages and costs were won by the company.The violation of the trademark was not a bar to punishment.[45]

Levi's is expected to use lasers in 2020 in order to cut and design ripped jeans.The company was awarded the Golden Halo Award for 2020 by the Engage for Good organization for their advancement in corporate social impact.48

Levi's has been worn by people from all walks of life, from miners to actors to Albert Einstein himself, whose leather jacket was made by Levi Strauss & Co in the 1930s and sold at an auction house for $11.[49]

Levi's uses a number of techniques to exclude competitors from its field.Its sewn patterns and garment labels distinguish it from competitors."Levi's" is one of the word marks that it has fenced off.These are part of the Levi's experience.Since 1873, Levi's has used its "arcuate design" on the back pockets of its jeans.This design was registered as a trademark by the firm in 1943.The Arcuate design is used to exclude competition in the garment field.This design has been trademarked by Levi's in more than 100 countries.[45]

The three geographic divisions of the company are: Levi Strauss Americas (LSA), based in San Francisco; Levi Straus Europe (LSE), located in Brussels; and Levi's Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa (LSMA), in Singapore.Approximately 16,000 people are employed by the company.

The company was passed on to his nephew's sons.The company was owned by the family of Walter A. Haas, who married the daughter of David's fourth son, Sigmund, and became president in 1928.After 34 years of being private, the company was regained by the family in 1985.In February of this year, the company filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering to be traded on the New York Stock Exchange.The company went public for the second time in its history at a price of $17 per share.

The company promotes progressive causes.During the 2016 presidential campaign, they donated $1 million to support immigration and LGBTQ rights, making them one of the earliest private sector institutions to do so.Bergh spoke out against gun violence in an Op-ed for Fortune magazine.[56]
