Can a dog take apoquel and claritin?

I get a lot of questions from my clients. They inspire me with article ideas and keep me up to date with people with diabetes.Sometimes the questions are worthy of a newsletter, and I enjoy interacting with our readers. There are likely lots of people with the same question if one person takes the time to write me.Let's talk about how we can help this puppy.

Is my dog going through the yearly scratching and licking phase? She has had steroid shots and is now taking Apoquel. We have her back on Apoquel because my vet doesn't want to give her steroid shots anymore. We haven't seen an improvement since a couple of weeks ago.She is starting to howl because of the itch. How long should I keep her on the medication and how much should she take daily?

I'm assuming your pet isn't a diabetes patient. It wouldn't make sense for your vet to give a steroid injection to a pet with diabetes. Most of our newsletter readers have pets with diabetes. We try to avoid steroids in pets with diabetes.

If Apoquel didn't work in the past, there could be a secondary infection. You should take her to the vet.A tape prep cytology is used to look for yeast andbacteria under a microscope.Great drugs like Apoquel and Cytopoint can cause infections.Taking care of an illness can relieve the itch.

A good chance is that it is a seasonal allergy.I have never examined your pet, but there is a new product that works the same way as Apoquel and can be used with it.Apoquel works to stop the body from causing itch.Your vet will give you a Cytopoint injection that will bind up one cytokine from causing itch. There is a link between the cytokine and the point. It is safe.

Give her a bath when she is itchy.Bathing can cut the itch. It's a good idea to use a non-drying hair product.

The beauty of antihistamines is not forgotten.Cetirizine is an over the counter generic that I am a fan of.It doesn't cause a lot of drowsiness. If she is howling, get her to your vet as soon as possible so that you can reexamine your game plan.Benadryl is known to cause drowsiness and can help her sleep through the night.

Is she taking Omega 3?Fish oils are an aid for long term allergy management and have a subtle effect in the short term.Another option is allergy testing.Allergy testing has changed a lot in the last few years.Your vet can take her blood and send it to the lab to see if she has an allergy to trees in your area.

Flea allergy can be considered if the seasonal allergy occurs in warmer months. There are parasites that happen!Fleas and other parasites that are too small to be seen with the naked eye are part of a physical exam.

Make sure my recommendations fit your pet's special health needs by consulting your vet first.

I have a toy poodle who has been through it all.Apoquel, hydroxyzine, benedryl, loratadine, medrol, prozac, nordic naturals, and Genesis spray.Nothing helps. After using nexgard for a while, the skin was always negative and now uses frontline gold with heartgard plus.We apply a cone when he goes at it.Every other week, malaseb with resicort cream is used.Either trizchlor4 or malecetic spray can be used in between. He chews on his paws.I apply mometamax every now and then.I feel bad for him.We fear we couldn't get a realistic food trail accomplished because he is so fast to snatch it up.The next step could be a blood test for allergies.Maybe I should just ask for it, because this hasn't been offered by our vet yet.We are grateful for any advice you can give.Thank you for your time and consideration.

I have a 13 year old poodle. She has developed many adenomas. There are patches of pink skin. The best way to reduce itching is with an over the counter solution. After my vet gave her a shot of vetalog, she continued to have itching even after a week of pills.I am getting the opinion of another vet next week, but really could use your advice.

It is not possible to evaluate an itchy pet without an examination.Don't forget to have skin cytology. It's important to cover for things like fleas. Some apoquel or cytopoint will be tried by your vet.Steroids should not be used if your pet has diabetes.oatmeal based shampoos is the mostholistic over the counter option. It is a good option.Best, Joi.

Hi!I have a dog.He is young.I give him bendaryl nightly because he has been on apoquil injections.I don't think the injection works well when he gets it.It's still itching! He has an ear infection.I treat it.It comes back a few weeks later. His eyes are red.His skin is red.He doesn't stop until he has blood and scratches.I feel bad for him.It hurts my heart.About 6 months ago, he switched to grain free food.I am not sure if it is helping. Is there any other medication that is good for allergies? These paws allergy bites have begun to be given to him.I have not seen much change. He needs some kind of relief that doesn't cost $80 a month.Do you have any knowledge of magic?

Apoquel is a drug. You could be referring to the injection. Both are drugs used to treat diseases.Apoquel can cause immune suppression. There are no known side effects of Cytopoint. Both can fail, but are often thought of as miracle drugs.Secondary bacterial or yeast infections are the most common causes of failure. If you want to determine how to treat, take your sweetie to the vet.It is easy to do embryology in the vet clinic with tape, a q tip, and a microscope.Grains aren't the most common food allergies for dogs. The most common food allergens for dogs are meat and dairy. They make it for food trials.Food trials last 3 months.Ultamino is a novel food that is down to the a I o acid level.Your let can be tested for environmental allergens with a blood draw.It is not cheap. Is it a good idea to visit a vet dermatologist?

I am also having a similar problem. My dog is a chihuahua and she has never lost her hair before.I believe that her hair loss and itching started after she got fixed. She is scratching her stomach, biting her legs and feet, and also her neck. She started to bleed blood when she scratched so hard.I went in for a skin scraper because the doctor said they couldn't find any mites, but she did not recommend a cytology. She was on benadryl. She started to scratch again after 7 hours on her first day on apoquel.I worry because her hair keeps falling.I am going to bathe her after she gets her nails trimmed and her ears cleaned.I hope it will help her feel better. If there is anything else I can do, I will do it.I made a nurse appointment so she could get the injection.I know these medications are supposed to stop the nerves from itching but they don't work and seem like there is only one solution to my problem.I need a cure that will show improvement.I need help or ang advice. She was put on justfoodfordogs to help with her pancreatitis.I want her to regain her health in a way that she can fight the mites.

I have a dog with ear infections that flares up.He is a tricky little boy because he won't let anyone touch his ears to do regular cleaning or put ear drops in.He has become paranoid because he can't tell us his ears are sore, but he does have little tell tale signs.prozac was prescribed by the vet and I haven't been bitten in over two years.Steroids were only a bandaid solution when he first got the eat infections, but after many trips to the vet we have now got him on Apoquel. When we go to the vet Junior has to be given a general anesthesia so they can check his ears and clean them. There was no noticeable improvement when we tried the injection.I couldn't give him his tablets with the biscuits we were trying on the elimination diet.During the transition of food, I started giving him a drug that alleviated itchining. He stopped eating the canned food after a few weeks and it was difficult to give him his medication.Sometimes I give him his tablets in melted cheese, but other times he is suspicious of anything I serve him.He starts itching and pawing at his face when he misses his tablets. We haven't had a vet appointment for him in 6 weeks, which is really good since it has been between 3 and 4 weeks for many months now.

Great job.Stick with the diet.If apoquel succeeded then a food allergy may be the culprit.Pets can have food allergies as well. There can be secondary infections if apoquel fails.

My dog has been on Apoquel for a long time.I was able to stop the Apoquel in the winter the first year, but since then he has been on it all year.We have been having milder winters so the grass has not been as active. It's a common thing for dogs to not respond to the Apoquel anymore.I tried several drugs on my dog and he attacked me.I see that it can be a side effect.I wouldn't use my 10 pound dog on a large aggressive dog.He was slightly better after three days, but not much.

Allergies can start at the beginning of the season and progress throughout the year. There is a secondary infection when a pet stops responding to apoquel or cytopoint.Less common things will be looked for by your vet.You could consider allergy testing.A trial of food.It sounds like you need to see your doctor.

I want you to help me.The toy poodle is 8 years old.For the past 4 years, he has been on 1/2 tablet 5mg of prednisone for itching everywhere and biting his toes.He wore a cone for 4 years with episodes of bandages on his feet, but the paw would heal and cone off for a while. He had thin hair on his chest. He started chewing again in December. For a while, the vet prescribed Aloqueli. He seemed relaxed. He started playing with my other dog.Jasper is silver. He has become a dark grey poodle with a silver head and front legs. This is the apoque. He began chewing all the places he was bitten by a flea.He has no fleas and we have never found a flea inside. He licked a spot on his leg.It heals if cone is back on.I don't think the apoquel is working. His daily dose is 1/2 x 5.4 tablets. He chewed his leg when I tried to give him alternate days to see if his coat changed back to silver. He has been diagnosed with a heart murmur and is now on Vetmedin twice a day.The plot is 8 years off.

I think I have a worst-case scenario here.My puppy is 2 1/2 years old and I live in Southeast Florida which is filled with fruit bearing trees. My dog had red eyes when he was four months old. We've tried everything out there. We looked for parasites and skin infections.Apoquel helps a bit.We fed him raw food which helped his skin and gave him some relief. His allergies won in time.3 vets have said it's Florida.

I live and practice in south Florida.Do you wash your pet weekly?Do you know if Cytopoint can be used in conjunction with Apoquel? If hay fever, Cytopoint is very effective.Have you tried a vegan diet?Do you speak with your vet about products that help repair the skin barrier?Did you rule out secondary infections such as yeast andbacteria?Do you have a pet allergy?Did you rule out demodex? Are you considering a referral to a veterinary dermatologist? My next steps would be these.Good luck!Joi.

My dog is allergic to almost everything except mold.He has been taking clemastine twice a day since March of last year.I was wondering if I should continue the clema that my vet said to give him because he had an extreme flare-up of something at the beginning of August.I don't know what to think about everything I've read about apoquel.

There are no contraindications to using Apoquel and antihistamines together.Antihistamines are inexpensive and are generally safe. Some vets don't use antihistamines when starting Apoquel, but I do.Despite using Apoquel, the tricks we used in the past are still helpful.Has your vet mentioned it to you? There are a lot of atopic allergy dogs. There are no known side effects to the drug and it is an injection that lasts one to two months.
