Can I expect to get an admit in top Canadian institutions such as McGill UBC or UofT for an MS in mechanical engineering with good scores in core subjects but a low overall standing due to poor performance in the

Yes.Most programs in Canada (Eg.UoT) look at only your past 2 years performance to gauge your GPA and compare with other candidates.

So, first year performance does not matter.Your GRE score and IELTS are good.Other things like SOP and LOR are also in your hand.

SOP needs to showcase your interest in pursuing the program and what you want to gain from that in the near future, and they also look at your communication skills in your SOP.Write about your project a little in SOP and correlate with your interest in pursuing MS in Mechanical Engineering. Also, try to include specific details about your experience in your internship (if you have it), here focus not on what you did, but on the emotions behind why you did it, what you gained from it, and how you would like to use that experience in the future.

LOR: Choose teachers that you feel can give you positive recommendations. The best one would be your department head.Good Luck!!

Yes, your scores are really good and you have a good chance of getting an admit. But it is going to be tough as you will be competing with applicants from all over the world. However you should keep some things in mind.

You have to be in the top 5% of the class.Selection process goes like this : Your GPA(8.0+ is good). Not less than 7.5SOP( Make sure to mention the reason for poor performance in first year)LOR’SProjects you’ve done in undergrad.Research experience or work experience.

(Research experience is important if you want to get into Master’s with Thesis, work experience doesn’t matter much for Master’s with Thesis. It may be helpful for Master’s with non thesis.Your UG collegeResearch papers or publications (Not mandatory but if have them, you have high chances of admit)Good luck and thank you..!

We only focus on academic performance which you have successfully showcased. So, more than 50% task is over.Don’t worry about the first-year performance.

Now, its time to focus on building your story.Academic performance has to be in sync with other proofs which you need to create while you are studying.Your SOP is the story of how inclined you are towards your interest area.

To make your story convincing you need LOR from your faculties.Other proofs like research papers, accolades, projects, blogs etc.will be of great help to strengthen your SOP story.

Universities consider GPA, Test Scores & Personals. You must try these univs, always once in a lifetime opportunity.
