Can you strip Relaxer from your hair?

Whether you've had relaxed hair for decades or just received a chemical treatment, it's time to switch back to natural. Is it possible to take a perm out of your hair?We asked our two natural hair experts,Leigh Hardges and Miko Branch, to show you how to grow out your relaxer.

We separated the myths from the facts and shared advice for a smooth transition back to natural hair.

We know that a relaxer is used to change hair types, but what is it?"Relaxer is a permanent straightening system," says Hardges. The hair is physically straightened while the hairs bonds are broken. The bonds are reformed with a neutralizing agent after being washed.

There is only one answer to this question.Branch says that stripping relaxer from hair is not possible because texture has been removed.Any such process would cause more damage to hair.I don't recommend getting a curly perm as it will cause major breakage on relaxed strands. You can stop relaxing your hair, which will only affect the new growth, and will most likely have to address the remaining relaxed ends in some way, whether it be to add more texture via styling methods or cutting the loosened ends off.

The chemicals used during a relaxing treatment break down the bonds in your hair in order to change the texture. No shortcut will be able to bring your hair back to life. The only way to get rid of a relaxer is to cut your hair off.It is not as long as you might think, if you want to wake up with new hair.In six months, with proper care, you should see three inches of growth, because hair grows an average of half an inch per month.

Double strand twists or a curly rod set can be used to add texture to your hair.

The relaxed hair and naturally curly hair meet at a weak point. The tension and heat applied will eventually cause the hair to snap at the transition point, says Hardges.Keeping the hair curly is the best way to prevent this from happening.During the transition period, protective styles such as sew-ins, twisting, rollers or a rod set will be optimal. You would have to trim the hair off slowly.

If you're not quite ready for a big chop, you can start with double strand twists or a curly rod set if you want to embrace your natural hair texture.Branch recommends investing in a styler for curly hair.It is possible to encourage as much curl as possible on relaxed hair with the use of Miss Jessie's Multicultural Curls.Waves are added by a few braids at night and loosened in the morning.Branch says a short haircut can double as a styling method and look while speeding up the process of removing relaxed hair as it's cut off.
