Cut-off shorts can be made at home instead of going to a store.A pair of jeans can be turned into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece with some shears.You'll save a lot of money making your own denim cut-offs.
Step 1: Pick your jeans.
You want to turn the jeans you choose into cut-offs.In the areas which will not be cut away, these should fit.They should not have damage that can't be repaired in a visually appealing way, such as wear and holes at the crotch.It would not bar them from use if they have stains or an undesirable color.
Step 2: Decide the length.
The jeans need to be put on in order to cut them.You can estimate a length, mark the spot with your finger, chalk or powder makeup, and then double-check by sitting down to make sure the chosen length is not too short.When you have determined a good length, mark the spot and remove the jeans.
Step 3: Add a length to the cuff or hem.
If hemming or cuffing, measure at least one inch below the desired length.Don't add any length if you want to have the ragged-edge look.
Step 4: Draw a line.
Take the distance between the mark you made and the jeans.You have equal points on each side if you make the same measurement on the other leg.If it is possible, mark a straight line across one leg.To make sure the mark on the other side is correct, fold the jeans and then draw a similar line on another leg.
Step 5: The fabric needs to be cut.
You should cut the jeans at the line you have marked.If you want to cut through the material cleanly, use heavy shears.
Step 6: Hem or cuff as you please.
Place the jeans inside out and use a sewing machine with an appropriate needle to add a 1/2” hem.If you want to add a cuff which will minimize the importance of a clean or even cut line, do not hem and just roll the bottom to the desired length.You can wear your shorts or modify them to fit your style.
Step 7: Prepare for dying and strategic bleaching.
You can change the color and pattern of your shorts with strategic bleaching or dying.If you want to do a fade effect with bleach, you should only bleach the top or bottom half of the jeans.
Step 8: Add paint.
If you don't want to wear or wash your shorts a lot, you can paint them.Depending on your skill and personal preferences, there are many ways to paint your shorts.A dark pair of shorts can be painted to look like a galaxy or the night sky.If you want to apply paint to your shorts, use an old toothbrush dipped in paint.Smudge on the blues and purples.Adding a pattern or design to your shorts can be done with a stencil.You can either make your own stencil or buy one from a local craft store and use spray paint to add your design.
Step 9: A fabric layer is created.
You can attach a different fabric to the shorts in order to make them more fashionable.Cotton prints can be used to trace the shape of the area you want to cover.You can leave a seam allowance, iron it down, and then use a machine or hand to sew the overlay to the desired section.You can cover the back pockets, one or both front sections, the cuffs or just the trim.
Step 10: Add some lace.
Adding lace can make shorts sexy and fashionable.You can add lace in a number of different ways.lace can be added to the whole pair of shorts.Attach lace trim into rows across the pair of shorts by sewing or using iron-in seaming.If you use several different styles of lace, this looks good.Begin at the waist and move downward in parallel rows.lace can be added to just one section of the shorts.It can be added over the back pockets, over one of the front sections, just at the hem or cuff, or anywhere you want it to look best.To make the lace, trace the shape that you want covered, add a little extra, fold and iron the seam down, and then sew it into place by hand.
Step 11: You can create a side slit.
Adding an inch or two of stretchy fabric to rejoin the sides will make shorts that are too small fit a bit better.To make them fashionable, choose a fun print.Adding a slit and grommets or button holes to the shorts will make them sexy.
