El Degello is a song by The Bugle Call.

The day after the fall of the Alamo, I had time to read all the comments and discussions from the day before.

The bugle call used by the Mexican Army was one of the most frequently discussed topics.

In Spanish history, the act of beheading orthroat-cutting became associated with the battle music, which is why the word "Degello" is derived from it.

The most accurate version of the song you can find on the internet is the one by Ron Lawrence.I asked Ron about the research he did for the recording.

I analyzed the tune from a musical and logistical perspective to answer your question.

I tried to think of a small band that could play music under difficult circumstances. The band size of Santa Anna would have been small.Santa Anna would have wanted more fighters and fewer support personnel in his army.I could imagine a lot of musicians.

The tune was most likely performed mostly in unison, with little harmony. It wasn't played in a flowery way.The way I recorded it was with 3 trumpets repeating the melody.

It was probably played with a moderate pace, not fast and showy, and I don't think it was played like a dirge. The recent movie "The Alamo" was a little too slow.My pace is 78 beats per minute.I think that the dotted16th and 32nd notes were played very short and staccato.I don't think that much time was taken between eachsection, with the space just like a quarter rest to give the brassplayers a short rest and time to breath for the next phrase.

A couple of drummers were present at The Alamo who played for the marching band.A march beat one would hear on a military parade field is one of the reasons I feel that the tempo was moderate.

Unlike the recent Alamomovie version, the last note was strong and long. The last note died in an anemic fashion because of this version.I don't think that was the way they played it.He was a warning and a threat. The meaning of the song was not served by allowing thetune to die out.My version is more in line with the original intent of the piece.
