Kyle is an imaginative young boy who loves to solve puzzles.One day, Lemoncello will unveil a high tech library in which he selects twelve young children to solve puzzles and riddles and whoever gets out first will be the new spokesman for all things lemoncello.The twelve are Kyle, his best friend and adventurous Akimi, bookworm Sierra, nerd Andrew Peckleman, bully Charles Chiltington, popular girl Haley Daley, and Rose Vermette.Upon entering the library, Lemoncello and his assistant explain how difficult it is and that they can use the devices they are given to opt out, which opens a trap door and takes them out of the building.Bridgette and Sean will go home.After the rules are explained and the players are given a library card, they are hit and eliminated if they don't listen to them.The challenge begins after that.When he solved the first clue, he found out that he was a bully and lied to Yasmeen to get rid of her.Four rooms are designed based on book genres: horror, fantasy, classic, and children.The rules of entering the room are explained by a hologram named Ms. Tobin, who can only enter one room at a time.When he tries to enter the horror room to get the clue, he is terrified by Count Dracula and the monster from The Tell-Tale Heart.Rose opts out due to her fear.In order to get fed up with one another, the six children divide into two teams, one of which is Kyle, Akimi, and Sierra.While Kyle's team enters the classic room where they had to ride flying books to solve a clue, the team from Chiltington enter the kids section to put Humpty Dumpty together.Both teams receive their clues despite the fact that Chiltington lied to everyone and forgot the clue in the children's section.Haley was disqualified by Ms. Tobin for trying to go back inside due to her selfies.As the crowd laughs at her, she is sent down the trap door.Dr. Z is going to deal with a glitch when Lemoncello talks to him.While making her way to the scene of the glitch, Chiltington and Peckleman state that they aren't cheating as she takes a golden key which has power over the whole library.Kyle's team enters the fantasy section while Chiltington decides to cheat and gets Andrew to follow him into the section as well as using them to get the clue which Andrew is uneasy about.The giant from Jack and the Beanstalk is going to attack them if they fail to make out as many words as they can from Lemoncello.Kyle's team gets a clue.While using the key to collapse the beanstalk and cause the Wicked Witch of the East (Breanna Watkins) to manifest, Chiltington accidentally destroys the system releasing all the creatures into the library and wrecks havoc.Lemoncello went into the library to help the children.The kids were able to use the characters' weaknesses, like water on the Wicked Witch of the East, to their advantage.After being attacked by Hansel and Gretel for eating their bread crumbs, Chiltington decided to help the team.The group escaped into the vent as they saw the giant approaching the exit.Lemoncello was able to put a distance between them and the other people.Ms. Tobin tells them how to use it after she fought off the troll.The order is restored until a giant pterodactyl shows up.Kyle's idea was released in the idea room when the children had entered.Instead of running in fear, Kyle faces his fear and fight off the dinosaur with red balloons he found after Lemoncello told him not to blame himself for his idea, but embrace it as his own and defeat it using his bravery.Lemoncello was impressed by the bravery and creative solutions of the five remaining children and declared them all winners.Dr. Z told Lemoncello that she would need a vacation as well as getting the book characters back into their respectful sections after this.After learning that Chiltington's parents couldn't be here due to work, Peckleman offered him his friendship and a ride home.Lemoncello gives Kyle a golden key to keep for safe keeping after he agrees to work as a summer librarian.

Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library was a New York Times best seller.The book was praised by Kirkus Reviews as a "solid, tightly plotted read" full of puzzles and puns.Publishers Weekly said it was a good book for any middle-grade reader.Reviewers said the book was similar to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.[6][7]
