I saw the preview to Cadillac Records yesterday and have been listening to her for a while now.I was wondering if she was still alive.

Etta James, whose 1955 hit "The Wallflower" reached #1 on the R&B charts, is still active in the scene. She has earned 3 Grammys in the 2000s, and has also been a member of theGrammy Hall of Fame twice.

Jamesetta was five years old when she started singing in the Los Angeles Baptist church choir. She and two other girls formed a singing group after moving to San Francisco.Johnny Otis gave the trio a try out when she was 14."Work With Me Annie" was their answer song.

The young singer went to L.A. to record "Roll With Me Henry" with the Otis band and vocalist Richard Berry.Otis changed her name to Etta's nickname and formed her vocal group the Peaches. In 1955, "Roll With Me Henry" topped the R&B charts after some radio programmers objected to the original title's connotations.

Miss Peaches had some lean years, both personally and professionally. She got back on track in 1988 with a set called Island, Seven Year Itch.Sticking to My Guns was contemporary in the extreme, The Right Time was slickly soulful, and her most other '90s outings have explored jazz directions.Etta James Christmas was released in 1998.She received a lifetime achievement award in 2003 and was in the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001.Her Let's Roll album was released in 2004, followed by a CD of new blues performances, Blues to the Bone.

In concert, Etta James is a no-holds-barred performer whose suggestive stage antics sometimes border on the obscene. She has paid her dues many times as an R&B and soul pioneer.Long live the queen!

You know whether an artist is alive or dead because their work continues to live on.I like her sound and style and have listened to her jazz music.I saw a few of her songs on Christmas Jazz CDs, and my local library has a large selection of Christmas music. She is alive in sound if she isn't in the flesh.

I am happy that she is alive. She is one of the greats. She no longer has to sit while she sings because she has lost a lot of weight and is in better health. My personal favorite is at last.
