How do horse chestnuts keep spiders away from you?

One morning, while walking our kids to school, I yelled at another Dad about the recent abundance of spiders, because he was pulling a web from his hair.I had never heard of chestnuts being put around a house to keep spiders away.He acknowledged the strangeness of the idea but insisted on its effectiveness, even though he found different versions of it on the Web.Others thought it was the wood, not the nut or fruit.I didn't see anyone mention the spikey case still on.It is possible that people with arachnophobia would like to believe that it is easy to keep spiders away.

It may be more widespread in Britain. The Royal Society of Chemistry held a contest to find the best evidence against the idea that spiders dislike conkers.

The winning class is from Cornwall. The spiders didn't seem to mind walking over conkers compared to other materials.

Kids these days seem to get patted on the head for every little thing, even though they weren't afraid of spiders, and they were praised for their efforts.I didn't expect horse chestnuts to have an effect on spider behavior, but I'm not sure the idea was tested enough.

1.Some of the spiders would not occur in a house. If the question is whether horse chestnuts keep spiders out of your house, it might be a good idea to look for them. There are some things people might think about spiders in BC.

2.It is not a good idea to harass the spiders. You would have to wait to see what spiders do over time.I had not realized that household spiders are not coming in from the cold and you aren't doing them any favors by putting them outside.

3.Horse chestnuts are inedible, which may support the idea that they are noxious to spiders. It has been suggested that you open the chestnut up or poke holes in it to take effect.

I am curious as to why people would believe this if it turns out that horse chestnuts or other items don't have any effect. If you happen to have conkers around at this time of year, the spiders might disappear for other reasons.

I don't have many spiders in my house, and I have horse chestnut trees all down my street.Let me know in the comments if you would like to test chestnuts on a bunch of spiders in your house.
