How do I repair or replace the Boot.ini file in Windows?

Prior to Windows Vista, the Boot.ini text file was used for Windows store boot options.You can use a text editor such as Notepad to modify Boot.ini.It is documented in Windows Help and Support.You can change the boot options in the Control Panel.Select the settings under startup and recovery in the System Properties dialog box.This is not discussed in this section because it is limited.The Startup and Recovery dialog box can be found in the Help and Support Center.
It is possible to change boot options on local and remote computers.You can use the same Bootcfg commands and procedures to modify Boot.ini, as well as the boot options in the EFIP.It's included in the %Systemroot%System32 directory in Windows.The commands are the same on systems that store boot options, but the Bootcfg display is slightly different.
You can change boot entry parameters and boot options, but you can't set a boot time-out value.If you replace or upgrade an operating system, you can use a script or file to reset the boot options.
Bootcfg does not change the protective attributes on Boot.ini.It helps to avoid typing errors that might prevent the operating system from starting.

You can use a text editor.This method is prone to error and should only be used when Bootcfg is not available.
The file attributes that Windows uses to protect the file from accidental changes must be removed before editing Boot.ini.To change Boot.ini's attributes, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the computer.
The following procedure is used to prepare Boot.ini.The hidden and read-only attributes of the file are removed by this procedure.
You can open the file in Notepad.The following command should do the trick quickly if you are in Windows Command Prompt.
