It is safe to use standard dishwasher soap. If hand washing, rinse the PRE-FILTERS and FILTER's collection plates in your sink to remove loose debris. Submerge the PRE-FILTERS and FILTER in warm, soapy water and allow it to soak for 15 minutes. Rinse with cold water.
