How often should I water a Christmas tree?

It is important to stay hydrated during the holidays, especially if you are a Christmas tree. Many of us have thirsty tannenbaums.

Tim O'Connor is the executive director of the National Christmas Tree Association, a trade organization representing more than 700 farms.

"No matter what type of tree you choose, you want the needles to be green and supple," advises O&Connor. It is not going to last long if it is already dry.

When the trees were delivered, ask the nursery owner or lot attendant. Some sellers will receive all of their trees at once, while others will have shipments scheduled throughout the season. You want a tree from the most recent delivery.

If you want to test the tree, run a branch through your hand. The tree is already too dry if the needles fall off or the branch is brittle.wrinkled bark, discolored needles, and a musty odor are some of the signs of a dry tree.

Before placing your tree in water, you should use a saw to remove a half-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk. If you cut the trunk into a V-shape or drill a hole into the base, it will make it harder for the tree to absorb water.

After cutting your tree, place it in a bucket of water or a water-filled tree stand. The species can take up water for six to eight hours after a trunk cut, but sooner is better.

One quart of water per inch of stem diameter is provided by a quality stand that is large. The outer layers of the wood are the best for absorbing water.

If you have a history of neglecting your plants, invest in a water monitor that will alert you when you need to refill your stand.

O&Connor says you should be watering your tree daily. They take up the most water during the first seven to ten days.

If you have a five-inch tree, you want to keep at least five quarts of water in your stand each day. There is no harm in refilling your stand to capacity if you know your holiday drinking limits.

The tree's trunk should be submerged in the water if the stand is low.

O'Connor says don't use Additives in the water.Trees only need clean water if you recommend plant food for cut flowers.
