How To Add a New Book to the Goodreads Database

Do you find it hard to find a book that you've read that isn't listed in Goodreads?"No book by that name results" is the result of a search on Goodreads for a great book. You can add new books to the database when you find them. The advice in this article will help you add books to the Goodreads database, so you don't have to worry about them not being found again.

Step 1: You can visit the website in your browser.

You can use Goodreads to share the books you're currently reading with friends.

Step 2: You can find your book on the Goodreads site.

You can search by name, author's name and ISBN, as well as a number of other items.

Step 3: Determine if the book is a new book that needs to be listed, or if it's already listed.

Since every book is different, there are exceptions, and most often this can be determined by comparing the titles on the same site.Newspapers, magazines, and comics are not books. These books are not for Goodreads and must not be added to the database.

Step 4: To add a book, use the Add a New Book to Goodreads website link.

Step 5: Your book is near your computer.

There are a few things you need from your book.If you don't have a copy of that particular book handy, it's a good idea to know that Goodreads allows information to be copied off of the WorldCat and Amazon websites. You can't take information from Barnes and Noble and use it for a Nook version of your book, as per the policy.

Step 6: The "title" field is where you can type in the book's title.

Although the page tool does a secondary search for verification to see if the book exists and gives you comparable results, take a second to check this list.Determine if any comparable matches can be found. If you don't know if the book's title is a match, right-click the item and choose "open in New Window or New Tab"This title can be interesting if the book is part of a volume. The volume number can be entered after the title of the book.I mean, i.e."Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" is already in the database so don't use it as a real entry of a new book.

Step 7: The "Sort by Title" field can be found at the bottom of the list.

If you were looking through an old-style card catalog, type the title in again. It is possible to remove the words A, an, the, etc.A title called "A New Light" would be listed as just "New Light".Special treatment is given to book entries that are part of a series. You add the volume number after the last few words of the title. That's right, i.e."Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets would be sorted out as a 'chamber of secrets' as opposed to the 'Chamber of secret'."New editions of already present books should have the corrected sort-by field entered already when you add another edition entry.

Step 8: The author's name should be typed in the entry box.

On the New book entry page, add authors as they appear on the front of the book, but if different verification sources disagree, you can list them in alphabetical order. With different format's of authors names, the formatting of the name is different depending on your exact scenario, and few situations will ever be the same for brand new books that aren't in the database just yet.The primary author of the book should be the first author. There should be no other authors listed in the first text box.If the book presents it's authors in all-CAPS, then the name should be written as if it was the legal name entry on a paper form. The names should start with the first name with a space, followed by the middle name, and finally the last name. The Goodreads Librarian can link the books if they find it is a separate edition of an existing book.Authors who use their initials should list their names without a space between letters, but should have a period after each and every initial.Ex.J.L.Roth should be listed in the box. There is a person named "Roth".Follow the initial rules if the author gives their middle name as an initial.Provide their initial followed by a period and then their last name.If they give their full middle name, type it in the box.Unless it is necessary to avoid confusion or is part of a recognizable pen name, names with title or degree designation should never be listed in the author name field.Additional authors include editors, narrators for audiobooks. There should be separate entries on the new lines. If you click on the "Add role" link next to the author's name box, you'll see a box that shows the type of author for the book. There is a fill-in box that can be accessed if the author role isn't supplied. If more than one author is present, there's a link below this box that asks for additional authors. You need to enter all of them into the appropriate boxes if you want to supply as many as is given in the order they appear on the book's front cover.

Step 9: A book with the only official author name of "Anonymous" is an example of an author-ize book.

If there's any uncertainty in the author name and a suitable author can't be found in a book or on the internet, you should list him as "Unknown".

Step 10: You can add a cover image for the book by uploading a picture of the front cover.

The field. It's okay to use your own image of that book from a file you have on hand, as long as the picture isn't just Goodreads or Amazon stock photos, which look like a brown-covered book.

Step 11: The ASIN is an Amazon-only direct access ID-type.

Goodreads wants regular paperback or hardcover books to be listed under theISBN-13 number and use only the ASIN numbers for Amazon and Audible books. If you want to research the book on Amazon using the ASIN number, you can click the "Click for aSIN" link.

Step 12: The publisher name and publication dates should be entered into the applicable fields.

The publisher name can be found inside the book on the publisher data or title page, but it's best to use the date Amazon gives you, as the Publication date line, if you're looking for it.

Step 13: You can type the number of pages into the box.

They consider the amount of pages in the book to include all of them, except for advertisements for other books or preview chapters. You can get this information from Amazon.Other types of books will be treated differently and will vary a lot. It's not a good idea to estimate the pages of the real book.Round the audiobook up to the next hour if it's only a minute or two long.It is possible to say that (e.g.If the book lasts 3 minutes, the page count should read 1 since the next total amount of hours is 1 hour.

Step 14: Click the drop-down menu to find out which format the book is in.

Most of the time, these entries will be "Hardcover", "Paperback" or even "Audible Audio" but there are exceptions. It's a good idea to be careful with books of eBooks. When these formats are on the list already, they should not be listed as "ebook" if it is bought directly from a company.Similar to format types, there are others that need to be applied, but aren't commonly used. You must choose "eBook" from the list if the book isn't sold from a first-rate retailer. You must select "Unknown Binding" if you can't determine the format.Don't select "Unbound" as these look similar from the get-go but are completely different things."Paperback" with "Mass Market Paperback" is one of the format differences that must be watched.Click the "Other" link and type the format into the text-entry box if it isn't available.

Step 15: If the book has more than one edition number, you can type it.

This field is for information only in the holiday edition. The field should be entered as written on or inside the cover.

Step 16: If there is a book available, you can type in the official URL.

If there is an author or publisher site that describes the book you have, this field should be used.It shouldn't include a fan site, library or other site about the book.

Step 17: It is possible to copy.

The Description box is important if other editions pop-up, as these carry-over without even asking the edition adder from one edition to the next.If you still have no data for this box, you can write your own summary without using images or links to other websites. The exact link to this site must be written in the description box to explain where the data came from.

Step 18: Select from the drop-down menu underneath the description, the language the book is written in, if you scroll your eyes down.

English is the most commonly used language for book entries on Goodreads, but this language will depend on what language the book is written in.That's right, i.e.Since the language of the book is Portuguese, this entry must be selected as "Portuguese" if it is a translated book.

Step 19: There are three fields that can be filled in if you look below the "Work settings" label.

Sending this information out will help those looking to find a book with alternate information or one with drastically different information. If the data is different from the very first publication to the present-day one, use the same format for the title and publication dates. Most of the time, the original publication date is mentioned on the title/publication data page, just a few page-turns inside the book. There is a "media type" field. If you accidentally select "not a book", it can be your worst enemy.Information on what isn't a book can be found here. The not a book option will be displayed for every account that is created, but only for Goodreads librarians.

Step 20: Look for the reCaptcha image.

Those who are grandfathered in to not have to fill out this field will need to do so.Each and every time you fill out this form, the reCaptcha box will be checked to make sure you aren't a robot that is sending new books through the database.

Step 21: Click the "create book" button if you want to scroll back down to the end again.

Step 22: Make a book display by searching for the profile page of the book.

It isn't very good to search by complete title. It will help narrow the search down to books with the same name, and it will also help you find duplicate editions of the book you want to add.If the book still doesn't display, you can click the most accurate match to another version.Add-a-New-Book-to-the-Goodreads-Database-Method-2-Step-1.pngIf you came up with a relative title after searching, it's time to create an alternate edition with the title given.

Step 23: Underneath the section containing images of other editions of the book that are in the database, there is a link to add a new edition.

If there aren't any other editions of the book, you'll find a link to the "Get a copy" section that contains other places to purchase the books that are always displayed.

Step 24: The text on the Add a New Edition page is pre-filled.

You can do a "once-over" by filling out the form with the New Edition page. You have to type in the rest manually. The cover of books that don't have a cover but can be obtained legally for Goodreads' use is different and only a Goodreads Librarian can help and should never be re-added.

Step 25: Click the "Click for ASIN" button and type the data into the appropriate field according to what you see in the book's details.

When you add one, the ISBN will send you an error. If you aren't a Goodreads Librarian, you'll want to hold off on clicking the "create book" until all the fields are filled out.If you know where the error lies, you can take action to fix it.

Step 26: The cover image of the book can be entered into the form with the same form data as you would have entered if you were entering a new book.

Add a brand new book to the database with the same formats as used in the above method.Adding alternate editions is the same as before.

Step 27: Click on the button at the bottom of the form to create a book.
