How To Build a Folding Screen

The folding screens have been used for thousands of years.Tombs in China dating from the Han dynasty in 200 BC have depictions of folding screens on their walls. There are holes at the edges of the wooden panels that hold the screens together. The purpose of today's folding screens is the same as they were many years ago; to serve as a room divider, provide privacy or as an accessory. If you want to build your own screen, you can pick up all the materials at your local hardware store.

Step 1: 3 plantation-style shutters are needed.

Purchase 3 shutters of the same size.If you're buying salvaged shutters, make them uniform in size by trimming them.

Step 2: 2 saw horses have the top edges aligned.

Attach them together in several places so that they don't move while you fix them.

Step 3: Wood putty can be used to fill in holes or cracks.

If you want, you can apply the finish of your choice.Allow the finish to dry and periodically open and close the louvers so they don't get fixed in one position.

Step 4: There are 2 shutters on a worktable.

Take the measurement down to approximately 12 in.You can make a pencil mark from the top right side of the 1st shutter.Make another mark by measuring the distance from the bottom of the shutter. The marks are where your hinges will be placed.

Step 5: Use the middle hole of 1 hinge as a guide to mark the other 2 holes of the hinge.

On the left side of the 2nd door, repeat on the bottom hinge.

Step 6: Attach the hinges on the front of the 1st and 2nd shutters using a screwdriver or an electric drill.

Step 7: The shutters should be turned down face down.

Attach the hinges for the shutters the same way you did before, but these go on the back so that the screen can fold properly.

Step 8: Attach vinyl furniture glides on the left and right edges of the panels.

If you are using your screen as a portable room divider, this is helpful.
