How To Build a Tall Drawer Chest

Do you need a place to put your items? How can we help?A tall drawer chest is easy to build. You just need the right tools and a desire for a new place to put your stuff.

Step 1: Decide on the size of the chest of drawers and how many drawers it will have.

The chest had to fit in a wall that was 37” wide and 24” deep and went up all the way to the ceiling, which was about 3 feet wide. The chest box has five panels of plywood, two sides, a top and a bottom. The back is made of wood. The chest box's top panel was 22” x 34 and the bottom and left panels were 22 and 46, respectively.A paper template with 1 foot is laid on top of a 4 foot x 8 foot plywood panel to see how it can be cut.Individual pieces were cut after lines were drawn on a plywood panel. You can cut these without a table saw.The panels were stained with a gel stain.

Step 2: The bottom panel needs to be assembled.

The diagram shows that the bottom panel is assembled by attaching L-brackets to the left, right, and back of the panel. There were two screw holes in each leg of the L.The brackets were screwed into the plywood withGorilla glue. The brackets add strength to the assembly process. Two strips of wood were cut to a length 1.5 in longer than the front of the panel and sold as 1x2 strips. There was a strip attached to the front edge of the panel with an overhang on each side. The top panel has a strip attached to it.The strips are cut the same length as the sides of the panel and then screwed into the side edges to form a tray. You will get a top and bottom panel for the chest with three strips covering the front and side edges of the plywood sheets. The strips will project from the surface of the plywood. There isn't a strip on the back edge of the plywood.

Step 3: Attach the metal slides to the side panels of the chest.

To make sure the left and right panels match, it's important to measure accurately. The two sides do not match. After making more accurate measurements, the drawer slides from one of the panels had to be removed and reinstalled. The slides were purchased for about $2 each.Instructions on how to attach the slides came with them. The sides will be attached to the panels.Take the bottom panel with it's 3 strips and metal brackets and drill three holes in the side strips. The same thing should be done for the top panel.

Step 4: Glue the inside of the left and right strips on the floor.

Attach the side panel to the bottom by using 1.5 inch ( 3.8 cm) drywall screws, and then place the left panel on top.The metal L-bracket should be screwed into the side panel plywood.Attach the top panel of the chest to the side panel. The side panel is attached to the top panel.

Step 5: Attach the second side and you will get a chest carcass with the four sides.

Cut and attach the strips to the front with the inside edge of the strip flush with plywood.Attach strips to the outside of the plywood to make an L-shaped edge.Place the chest carcass on the floor. The back panel of the chest is cut from a piece of wood.Once the chest is attached to the back of the carcass, the panel has to be cut with square edges in order to pull it into an exact shape.Place a bead of gorilla glue on the edge of the chest carcass and then place the back on it.Attach the left side of the panel to the plywood with screws. The chest carcass needs to be aligned with the other edge of the back panel.Attach the top of the panel to the chest carcass with screws.Stand the chest up.

Step 6: Attach the molded part to the chest with glue and nails.

The mold needs to be stained.Apply a second coat of stain and then three coats of varnish. To give a richer color, apply a thin coat of stain between each coat. The fence post crowns were shaped like spheres.Though they were hard to stain and varnish, these were a lot cheaper than buying bun feet. The crowns were screwed into the drawer chest with a spot of glue because they had a screw embedded in them.

Step 7: Attach the four sides of each drawer with glue and a screw that goes in from one face into the edge of the plywood like a frame.

The chest carcass's inside width is less than the width of the drawers to allow the drawer slides to fit.Avoid varnishing the bottom of the drawer frames if you want to stain and varnish these drawer sides.Attach the drawer bottoms to the drawers with glue and screws. There is a possibility that this is not the case.

Step 8: Attach the drawer slides to the drawers and then slide them in.

Measure the drawer front panel size required directly from the installed drawers and then cut them off.Attach the front panels to the drawers by staining and finishing them.I screwed from the inside of the drawer into the front panel with screws because it was easier to adjust. The drawer pull handles were attached.
