How To Close a Program That Is Not Responding in Windows 7

Your computer isn't responding.You try to, but you are nowhere to be found.Follow an easy path to get your computer out of the bind.If you want to get the fastest results, try the steps in the order presented.

Step 1: Press Alt+F4.

This will usually end the browser and programs.

Step 2: Shift +Esc can be pressed.

This will open the task manager.Click on "Start Task Manager" if you want to.

Step 3: Click on the program that is unresponsive.

It needs to be highlighted.If there are more unresponsive programs, you can click on them.Actions will only be performed on the highlighted items.

Step 4: Click the end of the task.

The selected program will be shut down by the computer.

Step 5: Press and win.

Step 6: Select the option to restart.

Step 7: Hold the On/Off switch until the computer goes off.

The cooling fan will stop and the power will go dark.If you use this as a last resort, you will lose unsaved information in programs and files which are still open.

Step 8: Wait at least 20 seconds.

Step 9: The computer should be powered back on.

Step 10: The computer should come up.

The computer may have been shut down improperly and you will likely receive a warning message.

Step 11: If the warning message has been displayed, hit enter to clear it.

The boot sequence will resume.
