Chitlins were never made by my mother.I am not sure if it was because she didn't know how or if she was just tired of eating them. The easiest way to feed a large family was with chitlins and other soul food.

I loved them the first time I tasted them.I just couldn't get enough of them, they were prepared by my uncle's wife.I would start cooking them on my own.

If you want to know how to cook for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years, then read on.Chitlins and chitterlings are great any time of the year.

What you have heard is true.Chitlins stink. It was bad. They will stink in the whole house. You have won the battle if you can make it past the smell. The final dish is worth it.It's a reward for putting up with the smell. You get used to the smell once you prepare them a few times.

Decide how much you want to make. They absorb water and shrink as they cook so whether you buy from the butcher, get the big red bucket of them, or buy the ones in the plastic package, you will end up with a little over half of the amount you started with.

Many people buy the red bucket of chitterlings. The cheapest and smelliest are what they are.You will need to clean them because they haven't been pre- cleaned. You don't have to clean the pre- cleaned chitlins in the bag, but they still smell bad.The ones in the bag are more expensive than what you would pay for a bucket. If you have to make a lot of dishes for Thanksgiving or Christmas, this can be worth it.

If you have sensitive hands, I don't recommend getting the ones in the bucket as they will irritate them.Even though gloves make it more difficult to get the job done, I still recommend wearing gloves.

Chitterlings are pig intestines. The intestines carry feces. You want to make sure to clean them thoroughly, but you also have to be careful not to spread any diseases such as E coli orSalmonella. These things can be found in chitlins.

I have included a video that will show you what you need to do.About ten minutes is how long it is.If you watch the entire video, you will get a better idea of southern cooking and family traditions, even if you are not in the South.

You should rinse them at least 3 or 4 times before you cook them. There are no set rules when it comes to soul food. There are a few things that are pretty much the norm for everyone.

Real soul food is not about measuring spoons and such, you have to cook by sight.About 10 pounds of chitlins is what this is for.

You can make your own recipe and share it with your family.Chitlins taste better after they have been cooked.Enjoy!!

Chitterlings were a main source of food for slaves. The slave owners would take the best parts for themselves and leave the rest for the slaves to eat.The pig snout, ears, intestines, feet, neck bones, and skin were included.Black women would cook in a kettle.

Chitlins are eaten by both black and white people. They are a specialty in the South. Some Blacks refuse to eat this type of food because they feel it is an insult to their heritage because of the struggles that slaves went through. My dad is one of these people. He used to tell me that they were scraps that the slave owners would give to the slaves, but he didn't understand why Blacks would eat them now.It is interesting to think about how people all over the world enjoy something that was considered not worthy of eating.

Chitlins is a traditional food made by Black slave women and is similar to other soul food.It is fitting to continue that tradition because they really put their heart and soul into their meals. When you cook for your family, be sure to put your soul into it.Give your taste buds a nice change by giving them a generous portion of dump cake.Enjoy!

I would like to thank you for this recipe.I made my husband some chitterlings and he loved them.My go to recipe now is this one.

Yes, Ruby! You can cook them in a pressure cooker.Normally you boil them for 3 hours, so I would do anywhere from 1 hour to 1.5 hours in a pressure cooker. You can always add more time if you need to.Let me know how they turned out. That's right.

I take great pride in making chitterlings that will change peoples perception of what they eat.I am a white guy.My Wife introduced me to them as a test during courting and I have run with it.Two pots are made my way and her traditional way. They are delicious and we have fun with it.

I am trying to make some now that my dad passed away, he made them Asian style with mustard greens.

Help is needed in the process of cleaning my chitterlings. They were boiled for 5 minutes. They don't look like the video, I bought a red bucket for them.Is it late to clean them?

I wish I'd tried them sooner when I was an adult. They are so delicious that you will want to eat them.Have a great holiday!Stayingalivemoma

Chittlins are a part of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. Why are the prices of the buckets rising when there are so many likers?Someones recipe went too well.Try a can of cream of chicken in your batches.

Do you add the potatoes when you first boil the chitterlings, and how long do you cook them?Is there any one who can answer these questions?

In my family from the south, I always had the terrible smell of cooking regardless of whether it was clean or not.

Chitlins were cooked when I was a child.I hated the smell and never cared for them.I cook them for my husband and daughters whenever I can.I hate that smell when I cook a pot for Christmas.I will try the potato trick and pray that it helps.Thank you for this post.

I was surprised to see a recipe for chitterlings. If you ever cook chitterlings, you will know they are not the most pleasant thing to smell.Adding potatoes will cut down on the smell. It is very good if you have it with hot sauce.Thank you for submitting this recipe.Someone appreciates a good southern cuisine. There is a website called juiceblendz.com.

I'm Chefryl!Thank you for stopping by!Your father-in-law loved your chitlins. They sounded delicious.I waited too late to purchase some for Christmas and ended up cooking them the day after, but they were still as good. You and your family will love the dump cake recipe.Stay blessed and have a happy new year!

The hub lady is very useful. The elders who used to prepare this have moved on.We didn't have them in my family when I was growing up in Jersey, but once married and exposed to them, I enjoy them between Christmas and the New Year.I cheated a bit but it worked.Parks was cleaned and seasoned.I put them in the microwave because the family threw a fit.I took my crock pot with me to the screened porch. They put the chittlins in the pot.Returned to the kitchen with onions, green pepper, vinegar, hot sauce and garlic.Allow them to cook on high for six hours after adding this to the pot.My friends loved them but my family did not.My 88 year old is the best.

I have not forgotten the first time I was in a home where they were making food.Whew! Are you going to eat that? The finished product they brought me was pretty good.It seems like a good idea to cook outdoors until the smell goes away.

There is a version of chitlins called picante el tacneno. The story goes that during the conflict between the two countries, the soldiers from Chile stole all the cattle from the other side. They butchered them, took the best parts and left the rest. The locals already had potatoes and hot peppers in their crops, so they used what the soldiers had left and came up with this delicious dish.I like spicy chitlins.I have never prepared them, so I appreciate your help.I agree with the benefits of cast iron cookware.Thank you for sharing.I voted up all the way.

I did not start eating chitlins until I was an adult.Thank you for taking the time to comment!

I have never eaten chitlins.I was lucky enough to be around when they were cooking. They stink! We had a lot of "soul" food when I was a kid.I like Collard greens and corn bread the most.I can't do chitlins.

Thanks for responding! The hot water makes it easier to clean the chitterlings.Hot water cleans better than cold, so you have to think about what used to be in them.Take care!

My method of cleaning is similar to yours, I was curious to others methods.I would not change anything in your article.Well written!I was floored when I read that the lady told them to clean them in cold water.

The greatest city in the world is New York City.

My mother is from South Carolina. She was fond of black eyed peas.I can't stand them.To each, his/her own!

I am the boy after the chitlins whenever there is a pig roast. It's a good thing.I never thought of lemon or anything like that. Thanks for the tip.

Chitterlings have a distinctive smell, but it doesn't go away while cooking them, thanks to the reply.

If they are smelling while you cook, that's one thing I know. They are not clean. You don't use a potato or viniger to clean them.

I am a fan of baseball.I haven't had time to prepare in the last couple of years, but I plan on doing so before the summer.I can't wait!

I liked reading this article. My Grandmother used to cook the chitterling in a big black cast iron pot over a wood fire on the farm where I was born.During my 62 years in the country, I learned a lot.Thanks.

It would be nice to have some now that I haven't had in a while. It brought back a lot of memories for me, thanks for sharing.

All of the animal's parts are used by my daughter-in-laws people."You killed it, you eat it" is their motto.Fascinating history!
