How To Copy Paste Tab Delimited Text Into Excel

Text that is separated by tabs can be detected in excel and paste the data into separate columns. If this doesn't work, and everything you paste appears in a single column, then your text is using spaces instead of tabs, or your delimiter is set to another character. The Text to Columns tool can be used to divide data into columns.

Step 1: You can copy all of your text.

Tab-delimited text can be used to store data from a spreadsheet as a text file. Each cell is separated by a tab stop and each record is in a separate line in the text file.Select all of the text you want to copy and paste it into your clipboard.

Step 2: Select the cell you want to paste into.

The upper- leftmost cell is where you want your pasted data to appear. The cells below and to the right of your starting cell will be filled by your pasted data.

Step 3: You can paste the data.

If your data was properly delimited with tab stops, the cells should fill out correctly. The tab stops should translate into a new cell.If all of your data appears in a single column, there's a good chance it was changed from tabs to something else. The Text to Columns tool can be used to change this back to tabs.

Step 4: Pick the entire column of data.

You can use the Text to Columns tool to format your data if it didn't paste correctly.Select the entire column that contains all of the data you pasted to do this. The entire column can be selected by clicking the letter at the top.Text to Columns can only be used on one column at a time.

Step 5: Click on "Text to Columns" to open the Data tab.

This can be found in the Data Tools group.Click the Data menu and select "Text to Columns"

Step 6: Click "Next" if you want to select "De limited".

This will show the character that will be used to mark cell divisions.

Step 7: You can choose the character that your data is separated by.

Check the "Tab" box to make sure your data is limited. If your data was separated by something else, you can check the characters. If your data was split by multiple spaces instead of a tab stop, you need to check the "Space" and "Treat consecutive delimiters as one" boxes. If you have spaces in your data that don't indicate a column division, you may have problems.

Step 8: The format of the first column should be chosen.

The data format for each of the columns that are being created will be set after selecting your delimiter. You can choose between "General", "Text" and "Date"."General" is a mix of numbers and letters. For data that is just text, choose "Text"For data that is written in a standard format, choose "Date"

Step 9: For more columns, repeat.

You can choose the format from the frames at the bottom of the window. The column can not be included when converting the text.

Step 10: Finish the wizard.

After you formatted the columns, click Finish to apply the new one.According to your Text to Column settings, your data will be split into columns.
