There are three popular methods of searching for diamonds at the Crater of Diamonds State Park.The more you know about each option, the better your stay will be at the world's only public diamond mine.

Step 1: You can search in a small area.

Step 2: Diamonds can be found on top of the soil by rain or wind.

When the surface of your spot has been surveyed, do not move anything.

Step 3: Diamonds can be found under rocks and dirt clods.

Step 4: There is a spot on the search area that is dry.

Step 5: Only two handfuls of dry dirt can be put into your sifting screen at one time.

Step 6: Take the dirt out of the screen with a quick motion.

Step 7: Search for a diamond by spreading out the remaining gravel.

Step 8: Take a bucket of dirt from the search area and put it in a washing pavilion.

Step 9: Take part of the dirt and place it in a sifting screen.

Step 10: Pull the soil out of the water with a quick motion.

Step 11: All material larger than a quarter inch should be removed from your screen.

Step 12: Hold the frame of your screen on both sides and lower it into the water.

Step 13: Water washes small materials toward the center of your screen when you rock it back-and-forth.

Step 14: You can balance the screen on your fingertips by submerging it in water, and then tap it up and down until the water spreads your material out into an even layer again.

Step 15: The screen needs to be turned one-quarter turn.

Step 16: For about one minute, repeat steps 6 through 8.

Step 17: If you want to spread the materials out, tap the screen one more time.

Step 18: Allow water to drain from your screen for a few seconds after removing it from the water.

Step 19: If you want to turn a cake from a pan, flip your screen upside-down in a smooth motion over a flat surface.

Step 20: Diamonds can be found on the surface of your gravel pile.
