How To Do Candlewicking

Candlewicking is done with heavy thread on a piece of cloth. It uses an old technique called the "colonial knot".

Step 1: For your design, cut a piece of the muslin large.

Step 2: The pattern should be put on top of the muslin.

Step 3: Take the pattern and trace it onto your cloth.

A light box can help.

Step 4: You can keep the fabric from sliding by pinning it to the pattern.

Step 5: To see where the colonial knots are in the design, use a marker to make small dots.

Step 6: Check to be certain that you have transferred the entire Candlewicking pattern to the muslin and haven't missed anything.

Step 7: The pattern should be set aside when the pins are removed.

Step 8: The fabric should be placed in a hoop.

Step 9: The needle should be Threaded with 4 strands of Candlewicking thread.

How much floss you use will affect the size of your colonial knots.

Step 10: Attach a knot to the thread or floss with your first colonial knot.

If this is your first Candlewicking design, make colonial knots on a small piece of muslin before you begin.

Step 11: Left to right, top to bottom, whatever is the best way to prevent soiling finished areas.

Step 12: The marker needs to be removed.

Step 13: Put the piece face down on the towel and iron it from the back.

Step 14: Pat uses the iron to avoid damaging the colonial knots.

Step 15: It was finished.
