How To Drain a Toilet

If you need to do repairs, you may have to drain the toilet.You can drain a toilet in a few minutes.Shut off the water and flush the toilet to get to the drain.You don't have to worry about the water in the toilet.

Step 1: The water supply needs to be turned off.

There should be a shut-off valve near the toilet.A small knob can be found on the wall or floor near the toilet.The water supply is shut off when it is turned clockwise.Don't break the valve or pipe.The base of the valve should be held with one hand and turned with the other.

Step 2: The tank needs to be removed.

The top of the toilet tank should be set aside on a soft surface so it doesn't break.This way, you can see the water as it leaves the house.

Step 3: The toilet needs to be flushed.

Press down on the valve.The water in the tank should start to drain if the toilet is flushed.Double check the shut off valve if the water doesn't seem to be draining.To switch off the water supply, twisted it as far as you can.Shut off the water supply to your house if the toilet knob doesn't shut off properly.

Step 4: The valve should be held down until all the water has been drained.

Press down on the valve.Hold it down and let the water drain from the tank.

Step 5: The tank needs to be drained first.

If you attempt to drain the bowl before draining the tank, it won't drain properly.The first thing to do when draining a toilet is to put the tank in.

Step 6: Account for the mess.

The process can be messy even if you are careful.It's a good idea to put a tarp on the toilet base.Any water that spills out during the process will be soaked up by this.

Step 7: 3 gallons (11 L) of water is what you need to fill a large bucket.

Take a bucket that holds 5 gallons.If you have a tub or sink, fill it with 2 gallons to 3 gallons of water.

Step 8: The water should be poured into the bowl.

It may seem counter productive, but pouring the water into the bowl causes the toilet bowl to drain.Lift the lid of the toilet and pour the water into the bowl.The water will be drawn out of the bowl.If pouring slowly doesn't work, dump the remaining water in the bucket into the bowl.

Step 9: Remove any remaining water.

There will be some pooled water at the bottom of the bowl when water is poured into it.There is a lot of paper towels and a sponge.You can soak up the remaining water by pressing this on the bottom of the bowl.
