How To Get a Mamod Steam Engine Going

Are there problems with getting your Mamod engine running? If you own a Stationary Engine or a Mobile Engine, learn how to get up a head of steam and see your engine run just as it should.

Step 1: You should buy a Mamod engine.

If you look at eBay over a period of a month, you will see many different types of these. They range from " ready for restoration" to "immaculate unused".

Step 2: Decide if you want a Stationary Engine or a Mobile Engine, one that stays in a fixed position.

Step 3: You need to get it running by getting water and fuel.

Step 4: Always take your alcohol or dry fuel engine outside to run it.

It's easy to avoid accidental fire in the home.

Step 5: Water must be poured into the boiler through the hole in the top where the safety valve is located.

Don't fill the boiler. There is an overflow hole on the end. When the water comes out, leave this open and stop.Hot water can be used to reduce start time and increase running time.

Step 6: When the correct level is reached, stop filling when you see the Water Level Glass on the boiler back plate.

Pressure can build up in the boiler above the water if there is some air left in it.

Step 7: If you have a Water Level Plug, this is the time to put it back into the hole.

The caps on the overflow holes should be screwed back into place before fueling.

Step 8: Next is fuel.

Let's look at how to fuel up.There are two types of fuel. The present day fuel is put into a burner tray.Depending on the boiler size, it may be necessary to cut these tablets down in size to fit your burner.Older models have spirit burners that are non replaceable and soak up liquid fuel.

Step 9: The liquid you need is alcohol.

The top of the burner is where you should pour the amount of Methylated Spirit.Until you can see the alcohol on top of the gauze, the burners were sized to be filled. There is enough fuel for a good run of the boiler, but not enough to boil it dry.Don't top up the boiler without refilling the burner. If you have an older type of engine it will have a round tank burner with a number between one and three on it.Just fill the tank through the hole and then fit the brass screw cap finger.

Step 10: You are ready to go.

You need to squirt oil on the moving parts.Any moving parts that are in contact with another need some oil.No oil is better than Mamod oil. It's one of the most effective options. It's possible to use car engine oil, handyman oil or the real thing.Grease won't flow and will not lubricate fully.

Step 11: If your Safety Valve is tight, your water level is correct.

To get the oil around a bit, use your finger to spin the flywheel.

Step 12: The burner should be close to the engine and ready to be put under the boiler.

It's best to practice this once before you light up.The action begins!Place the burner under the boiler by using a burner handle and a box of matches. The hot boiler is not in harms way if you leave your engine until the burning process is done.

Step 13: The water will start to get hot and raise a head of steam.

There will be steam in the area. You can flick the flywheel now.It is seen in a clockwise direction when looking at the engine.

Step 14: It's time to let it run until the fuel runs out.

If you want to stop it from running, you can put your finger in the flywheel. The safety valve will blow with boiling steam and water if you allow it to run again. This is not a dangerous thing to do and can be fun, but just be aware of the hot steam.

Step 15: If you don't want to clean it, just drain the water and put it away.
