If you have a large canvas painting or picture that you can't wait to display, you may be wondering how to hang it in your home.To figure out the best placement for your new piece of art, you will need to prepare your canvas and take some measurements.Your friends may think you had help hanging it from a gallery professional when you are done.
Step 1: The canvas has mounting hardware on it.
To check the quality of the frame and wire, hold the canvas by the wire and lift it up and down a few times.It should be secure to hang if you don't hear any creaking or feel any give to the wire.
Step 2: If necessary, add mounting hardware and wire to the canvas.
If your canvas doesn't come with hanging wire or you need to replace it, you can attach two D-rings with screws to the back of the canvas.To make a mark on the back of the canvas, use a ruler and pencil.The same measurement is used on both sides.Attach the D-rings with screws.If you want your wire to be longer than the D-rings on both sides, you have to measure it across the width of the canvas.You need more wire for twisting.To secure the wire around the D-rings, twist it around several times.Attach any excess wire.A wire gauge can be used to measure the weight of your canvas.If you are unsure, ask a hardware store employee how much weight the wire can hold.You can hang a large canvas with sawtooth hangers.If you want to get the best results, position a sawtooth hanger on either side of the canvas.
Step 3: Picture mounting hardware is needed for the wall.
Most hardware stores have painting hooks that are 10 pounds up through 75 pounds.For heavier canvases, you can double them up.Floreat hangers are a popular brand because they are easy to remove in case of error, they have tempered nails, and they go in at the appropriate 30 degree angle.
Step 4: If necessary, get the drywall anchors.
You will want to hang the pieces over 120 pounds.Expanding metal screws that are driven into the wall with a hammer are the best to use.Follow the directions on the packaging.If you want to hang a canvas on a brick or concrete wall, you will need to anchor it.
Step 5: Take the height of the canvas and divide it by 2.
This will give you the halfway height of your canvas, which is important in determining how high you should go on the wall.Divide the height by 2 and write down the number on a tape measure.
Step 6: Your ideal height should be added to the halfway height number.
How high on the wall you want the center of your canvas to be is your ideal height.The center of the canvas is usually placed at an eye level of 58 to 60 inches (150 to 150 cm) from the floor.You want to leave 8 to 12 inches between the bottom of the canvas and the top of furniture if you are hanging it above furniture.It works for most pieces.If the canvas bottom is more than 8 inches (20 cm) to the top of your couch, try holding the piece with the center at 60 to 150 cm from the floor.It is possible to find a different space for the canvas.If the halfway height of your canvas is 25 cm, and your ideal height is 60 cm from the floor, the number you will write down is 70 inches (180 cm).
Step 7: The highest point of the picture wire should be subtracted from the distance between the artwork and it.
Measure the distance between the top of the canvas and the highest point in the wire on the back.The number should be subtracted from the number in the previous step.This will show you the distance from the floor to your hanging point.If the distance between the top of the canvas and the highest point on the picture wire is less than 20 cm, you should use the same size canvas.This is where the mounting hook will go into the wall.
Step 8: Place your hook on the wall using a pencil.
The number that you got in the last step is what you have to measure from the floor.The hooks will hang on the wall here.
Step 9: Attach your hook to the wall.
There is a point on the wall that you marked with a hook or nail.If you want to be extra sure that your canvas won't shift, use two hooks that are 10 to 13 cm from each other.To mark two new spots to hammer in two hooks, you need to measure from the central point to the left and right.Measure the distance from the floor to the hook points to make sure they are the same height.
Step 10: Put your canvas on the hook.
Place the wire on the hook attached to the wall.From where you are standing, adjust the canvas to make it look straight and level.
Step 11: The canvas is straight if you use a level.
Place a level at the top of the canvas.The canvas is level if the tube is in the center of the two lines.The picture is slanted if the bubble slides to one side or the other.The bubble must fall in the center of the level's tube to be adjusted.
