Are you ready to make a smoke bomb?You can make a great smoke bomb with just a few ingredients, whether you want to make smoke for a dramatic special effect, a chemistry experiment, or learn a useful survival tactic.There are several ways to make a smoke bomb, but the main ones involve using sugar, ping-pong balls, or ammonia nitrate and newspaper.Smoke bombs should be set off in an open area away from trees, pets, and other people.
Step 1: Pick out 3-4 ping-pong balls.
The method requires a few ping-pong balls.The balls are made of a compound called nitrocellulose.One ball will make up the actual smoke bomb, while the others will be cut up and placed inside of the first ping-pong ball to add more smoke when you set it off.The smoke will be the color of the smoke if you choose balls that are the same color.It is important to use celluloid ping-pong balls.The plastic balls are shiny and bend easily.The ping-pong balls are made of celluloid.
Step 2: A knife or screwdriver can be used to pierce a hole in one of the balls.
Take a ping-pong ball and poke a hole in it.If you want to do this, hold the ball between your thumb and index finger.Put pressure on the screwdriver or knife until it pokes through.The ping-pong balls will fit in the hole.
Step 3: Put the remaining ping-pong balls into the hole of the first ball.
Use a pair of scissors to cut the remaining ping-pong balls.You may need to pierce the balls with a knife or screwdriver in order to start cutting.The pieces should be small enough to fit in the first ping-pong ball.When the ball is completely full, fill it with the pieces.
Step 4: Wrap foil around the pencil and stick it in the hole.
Put your pencil inside the hole of the ping-pong ball you just created.It may not fit all the way in because you just filled the hole, so just make sure the tip of the pencil is touching the ball.Get a piece of foil that is at least 6 by 6 inches.Put the ping-pong ball in the center of the foil square and wrap it tightly around the pencil.The only purpose of the pencil is to create a mold for the foil, so don't completely cover it.If there is a hole in the foil at the end of the pencil, you can take it out when you are done.
Step 5: Remove the foil wrap from the pencil.
Pull the pencil out of the foil by grabbing it by the eraser.Make sure the shape of the foil is intact when you take it out.When you light a smoke bomb, the smoke will travel up through the aluminum foil and leave a chimney.
Step 6: There is a smoke bomb outside.
Smoke bombs should not be used indoors due to the risk of fire and smoke inhalation.There is a mildly toxic chemical inside ping-pong balls.Put your smoke bomb in the grass in an open area away from other people and pets.
Step 7: There is a ping-pong ball.
Use a lighter to light a flame under the ping-pong ball if you hold the smoke bomb at the top.The smoke will come from the hole in the ball and the chimney that is left by the pencil.
Step 8: Throw the bomb and watch it explode.
Move away from the smoke bomb if it starts to smoke.If you have to breathe in the smoke, stand a few feet back.Stand back a little farther if you start to smell funny.
Step 9: Put on your safety gear.
Smoke bombs can be made with simple ingredients.When you mix these ingredients and melt them together, you create a product that will make a loud noise when you light it on fire.You will need a cast iron skillet and baking soda.Baking soda will make the smoke burn a little bit longer.Get a pair of latex gloves, goggles, and a filter mask to protect yourself from smoke.You don't want to cook with an old cast iron skillet in the future.The mixture of nitrates may ruin it.You can buy saltpeter at your local garden store or online.It is important to wear safety gear.It can cause eye and skin irritation.Sneezing and coughing can be caused by breathing it in.
Step 10: Put duct tape on the end of the toilet paper tube.
You will need a cardboard tube to make your mixture.Put 2 pieces of tape on top of the hole.Wrap the two pieces around the base with a longer tape strip.The smoke bomb mixture will leak out if you pour it in the tube.
Step 11: Combine the two ingredients in a skillet.
Measure out the amount of sugar and potassium nitrate.Put it in your cast iron skillet and mix it with a spoon.
Step 12: For 15 minutes, heat the pan on the stove.
When the mixture is heating up, stir it constantly until it is completely melted.As the sugar becomes brown or black, it should form a thick, caramel-like texture.Don't overcook the mixture and make sure it's not set on fire.Turn the heat down if it starts to smoke.
Step 13: If you want the bomb to burn slowly, add a bit of baking soda.
Baking soda can be added before you take it off the heat.The smoke bomb will burn a little slower if the baking soda is used.
Step 14: The mixture should be put into the tube.
Turn off the heat on the stove and use a spoon to get as much of the mixture as you can into the tube.The mixture is going to be hard to work with.You can use a funnel to make it easier to pour.You can squeeze the mixture into the tube by placing it in a small plastic bag.Pack the cardboard tube tightly when you are pouring the mixture.When you light a smoke bomb, the smoke won't burn smoothly if it's not.
Step 15: While the mixture is still soft, insert a visco into the tube.
Consumer fireworks use a type of fuse called Visco.Cut at least 3 inches of the fuse and then stick one end into the tube through the mixture.If you have enough room to light it, make sure the fuse is sticking out of the mixture.
Step 16: The mixture should be cooled and hardened.
If you want your mixture to cool down, place it in aventilated area.It could take an hour or so to solidify.
Step 17: The bomb should be placed outside in an open area.
The outdoor area should be clear of buildings, trees, other people, and pets.You shouldn't light a smoke bomb indoors.The smoke bombs burn very violently.It's a good idea to put it in an open area away from anything that can catch fire.
Step 18: Enjoy your smoke bomb when you light the fuse.
Light the end of the fuse with a lighter.As soon as the fuse is lit, move away.A large cloud of dark smoke will be produced by your smoke bomb.
Step 19: An instant cold pack with ammonium nitrate can be opened.
You can buy a cold pack at the drugstore.They have a common ingredient used in garden fertilization.It can be combined with other ingredients to make explosives.Remove the small water bag from the pack by cutting it with a pair of scissors.
Step 20: Put all of the nitrate into a bucket.
Remove the water packet from the cold pack and pour all of the nitrates into a pan or bucket.Gloves are required when handling the granules.If Ammonium nitrate gets on your skin, wipe it off and then rinse it.When you're done washing your hands, use liquid soap.
Step 21: Water should be added a little at a time.
Water can be added from the sink or a hose.Make sure you add just a little at a time, and gently swirl the bucket until the nitrate is dissolved.When you notice that the solution is still concentrated, stop adding water.Bombs that don't smoke if you add too much water.
Step 22: Take 10 sheets of newspaper and fold them into squares.
Bring the top down to the bottom when folding the newspaper in half.The newspaper will fit in the bucket with this.Look for an older newspaper.Newspapers with a waxy film prevent them from lighting up.
Step 23: At a time, dip each newspaper sheet into the solution.
Put each newspaper into the solution and then rinse them off.For at least 30 seconds, submerge them in the liquid.Don't rip the wet newspaper while handling it.
Step 24: Lay the newspaper sheets out in the sun to dry.
You can use a driveway to dry your newspapers.If you lay them out in a sunny spot, they will dry completely and evenly.If you are in a windy area, lay the newspaper sheets out and put rocks or other weights on the corners to keep them from flying away.You can tell when they are ready by how easy it is to lift them off the pavement.
Step 25: Roll your newspapers together.
Put your newspapers in a stack once they are dry.Roll them up from one end.Tie a string around the rolled newspaper.Don't tie them too tight or loose because they will come apart.You can experiment with different lengths and width for your smoke bomb.Before rolling them up, cut up the newspaper sheets, rip them in half, or leave them whole.
Step 26: Take your smoke bomb outside and light it with a lighter.
The smoke bomb is ready.If you want to light one end of the newspapers, take it outside and use a lighter.There are clouds of smoke coming out of the newspaper.
