You don't need to be a crafting genius or have a lot of money to create your own Captain America costume.You'll need to put together a jumpsuit, helmet, and accessories if you want to model his old-fashioned costume or go for Captain America's contemporary get up.With a few basic supplies and some time to devote to crafting, you can make a great Captain America costume.
Step 1: The base of the costume is created by finding a long-sleeve white t-shirt.
It's important to look for something simple that doesn't have any words on it.The simpler it is, the better.You don't want the shirt to be too tight.
Step 2: To make the armor for the top of the costume, spray paint a football chest pad blue.
Purchase a chest pad at your local sporting goods store.Put the chest pad on the tarp and spray paint it.You can spray paint the other side after it dries.Before you wear it or bring it inside, let it dry completely.Royal blue spray paint is approved for use with fabrics.
Step 3: The torso region of the jumpsuit has red stripes.
Measure the distance from where the blue football chest pad ends at your stomach to the end of your white long-sleeve t-shirt.You can measure the length of the strips by cutting out several strips of red duct tape.If the distance between the football pad and the bottom of your white shirt is 6 inches (15 cm), each strip of red duct tape you cut should be at least 15 cm long.Depending on how wide your torso is, cut between 4-7 red duct tape strips.
Step 4: The front of the shirt should be covered with red duct tape.
Start at the side of your torso and work your way across your stomach to the other side.When adhering the duct tape, one end of the strip should be lined up with the bottom hem of your white shirt, and the other end should have a vertical stripe on it.The red duct tape stripe should be placed about 10 cm apart.
Step 5: A metallic poster board is used to create a star.
If you can't find a poster board, use white cardboard.A five-point star can be cut out with scissors or a knife.The star is about 15 cm tall.The blue chest pad has a star on it.If you want the points of the star to not hang over the padding, center it over your chest.Using a hot glue gun, apply a liberal amount of glue to the back of the star and then press it onto the padding.Put pressure on the glue until it dries.
Step 6: The blue pants are for the bottom of the jumpsuit.
To blend the top and bottom parts of the jumpsuit, find pants that are the same shade of blue as the chest padding.There are blue sweatpants, leggings, or spandex pants.If you can't find pants that match, buy a white pair and use a fabric dye to make them blue.
Step 7: Purchase a brown belt.
There is a belt made out of leather.If you can't afford a new belt, use a regular brown belt.Wrap the belt around your waist and put it in place.
Step 8: The shield should be made of a material.
It's easy to carry something lightweight with you.Some materials might need to be cut to the right shape.A round saucer sled is a good option.Most saucer sleds come with handles and are the right shape and size.There are red, white, and blue sleds.A garbage can lid.You can hold the shield with the handle in the center of the round lid.There is a piece of cardboard.Take a piece of cardboard and make a circle.You will need to glue a strap to the back of the shield to create a handle.
Step 9: Duct tape is used to decorate the shield.
Get blue, white, and red tape.Start by using red duct tape to create a ring around the shield's outer edge.Depending on the size of your shield, make it about 3 inches thick.The white duct tape can be used to make another ring inside of the red one.Continue until you have an empty circle in the center of your shield.Blue spray paint can be used to fill the circle.
Step 10: There is a star in the center of the shield.
Use a knife or scissors to cut the white duct tape.The strips need to be put together to make a star.The star should be placed over the blue circle at the center of the shield with each point touching the edge.
Step 11: Get a helmet and paint it.
You can use a skateboard helmet if you can't find a military helmet or it's out of your budget.You can use the same spray paint to paint the helmet as you did the chest pad.
Step 12: You can make an eye mask out of blue felt.
Buy felt at your craft store.Using scissors, cut the blue felt into an eye-mask shape, making sure to leave a grooves on the bottom for your nose.If you want to mark where both of your eyes line up with the felt, you have to hold it up to your face.Use a knife to cut out an eye hole.
Step 13: Use white duct tape to write a letter "A" for the helmet.
Use scissors to cut strips of duct tape.The A is about 10 cm wide and 4 inches tall.
Step 14: You should buy gloves to wear.
Look for gloves that are made out of leather.There are gloves that extend over your arm.If leather gloves are too expensive, use red or brown kitchen gloves.
Step 15: A pair of boots is all you need to finish your costume.
There are tall boots that cover your legs.Match the color of your boots and gloves.
