How To Make a Fan

A lot of school children have been taught how to make a paper fan.A paper fan can be made from a single sheet of paper, but there are many variations. The craft stick photo fan can be embellished to reflect your personal style.

Step 1: Place a sheet of paper face down on your work surface.

It is easy to find and work with this size of paper. The paper should be set in portrait orientation to make it taller than it is wide. When you start learning, use plain or scrap paper.Once you are comfortable with the technique, you can switch to more decorative papers.

Step 2: Draw folding lines on your paper.

To draw vertical lines, use a pencil and ruler. They should go from the bottom to the top of the paper.Move the lines in proportion to the paper size for larger wall fans.Smaller fans have smaller folds, which will make them appear more detailed.

Step 3: The accordion folds the paper.

Bring the right side of the paper to you by folding the first line.To press the crease firmly, use a bone folder. You should see a peak now.

Step 4: Take the next line and fold it.

The bone folder should be used to crease the fold in the opposite direction of the first fold. You should now see a dip in the paper.

Step 5: Continue to fold your paper.

You will begin to see dips and peaks. They should alternate between the mountains and valleys.

Step 6: Take the bottom of the paper.

You should be grasping the gathered portion between your fingers because the pleats of the paper extend up and out.The paper fans are off.

Step 7: Pull the folded strip with strong tape.

You could glue the folds together.Attach the glue to the bottom of the fan.Let the glue dry before you open the fan.

Step 8: You can open the folds at the top of the fan.

The fan can be used or embellished.

Step 9: You can cut a piece of paper into shapes.

You can leave it square, round the bottom, or cut it into a heart shape.

Step 10: The table has a paper face on it.

The side of the fan that is hidden should be facing you.

Step 11: Put glue on the top half of the craft stick.

Don't glue off the part of the stick that extends from the piece of paper.

Step 12: Attach the glue stick to the back of the paper.

You will have a handle to hold if the stick is extended out from the paper.

Step 13: Cut another piece of paper and glue it to the back of your fan.

This will make a double-sided fan.Glue should be spread on the back of the handle and around the fan's edges.

Step 14: Let the glue dry.

You can use your fan after it's dry.

Step 15: You should get your supplies ready.

You'll need a power drill, a dozen craft sticks, paint and brush, and a photograph.

Step 16: From the bottom of your craft sticks, drill a small hole.

For the rest of your craft sticks, do this.Make sure all the holes are in the same spot.Caution should be used when using a power drill. If you want to cut on a flat surface, wear eye protection.

Step 17: The craft stick has a hole drilled from the other end.

The top of your fan will spread out more than the base.

Step 18: The sticks can be painted with either tempera or acrylic paint.

Allow them to dry completely.Reds will need 2 or even 3 coats.

Step 19: Measure the length and width of your craft sticks by laying them side by side.

The sticks should not have gaps in between them.

Step 20: Prepare your image.

Attach a magazine photo to the sticks you measured.Make sure your picture is the same size as the sticks.

Step 21: The photo should be over the sticks.

The image should fit over the sticks. You should enlarge or cut the image if sticks are still visible. If your photo hangs over the sticks, you need to trim it down.

Step 22: Take a few moments to trace the lines along the photo.

The picture should be scored lightly along the sides of the sticks.

Step 23: Number the spaces after flipping the photo over.

After cutting, this will help keep them in order. The back of the photo should be numbered, not the picture itself.

Step 24: The photo should be cut into strips.

To make a neat, straight cut, use a craft knife.Hold a ruler tightly against the cutting line and slide the knife along the edge of it, pressing hard enough to cut through the picture.Use the craft knife with care.

Step 25: Prepare the glue.

Put equal parts of craft glue and water in a container.

Step 26: The strips should be applied to the craft sticks.

There is a glue mix on the back of a picture strip.Center the strip on a stick and brush a thin coat of the mixture on the picture and stick. This is how to repeat the strips and sticks.Allow them to dry completely.

Step 27: Put the sticks in order.

If you spread the sticks back out, you can see if they're in order.

Step 28: The fan needs to be Threaded.

Tie a knot with floss or ribbon. The other end should be Threaded through the holes from the bottom of the sticks.Tie a knot at the bottom of the fan.

Step 29: You should thread the top of your fan.

Place the sticks next to each other and tie a knot in the floss while the fan is open.

Step 30: Make sure your knots are secured.

Put a dot of glue on the knots and let them dry before opening and closing the fan.

Step 31: You can paint your fan.

You can use paint to decorate your craft sticks or paper. It is easier to paint the paper before folding the fan. Before using, dry your paper or sticks completely.

Step 32: Attach decorations.

Attach bits of ribbon, lace, buttons, feathers, stickers or beads using glue or double-sided tape.Since they could tear your fan, make sure not to add items that are heavy.

Step 33: You can shape your fan.

A few simple cuts will make your fan take on a whole new shape.Cut into the sides of the folds while your paper is folded.Keep your cuts small. There are small cuts across all the folds when you open your fan.
