How To Make a Genie Costume

The genie character may have originated from Arabian fairy tales, but it's become famous through modern TV shows like I Dream of Jeannie and movies like Aladdin. You can modify a genie costume to be suitable for both boys and girls. If you want to make a more feminine costume, you need to create the costume top before you put the bottom together. You don't need to add anything after that.

Step 1: Pick out your supplies.

You should be able to find supplies at craft stores. If you're making a costume on a budget, you might want to check out a secondhand store or thrift shop for some of the supplies. You'll need decorations, like fake jewels, rhinestones, and glitter. There is an optional empty toilet paper roll for ponytail holder.

Step 2: You should have your work area and tools ready.

You will be hot glueing parts of your costume. If you want to prevent hot glue from making a mess, you should place some newspaper or table cloth on your work surface.Attach a stick of glue to your hot glue.Plug in the gun to warm the glue.cardboard, parchment paper, or even tin foil are cost efficient alternatives to a Silicone mat as a cover for your work surface. The tip of your hot glue gun may start smoking if you use it for the first time. This is not unusual. If your gun continues to smoke or smoke excessively, make sure to keep it out of the fire until it's cool. How long it takes for the gun to warm depends on the model and make of the hot glue gun.You can expect it to take two to five minutes.

Step 3: There are flowing sleeves to the tank top.

Put glue on the straps of the tank top with your glue gun.Attach your fabric to the tank top strap with glue to make billowy sleeves for your genie costume. This is also done for the other sleeve. It's a good idea to be careful when doing it.If it gets on your skin, hot glue can burn you.You can change the shape of your fabric by cutting it with scissors. You can make simple sleeves by attaching the tulle to the tank top in a way that it forms a cylinder shape through which an arm can fit.Attach parts of your costume with hot glue.Hot glue is very hard to get rid of.

Step 4: If you want, you can make a vest.

A vest isn't required for this costume, but many depictions of genies have vests. To make a vest, use your scissors to cut the sleeves off your t-shirt and a slit in the middle of it.

Step 5: Attach accents to the costume top.

It can give your vest a bit of extra glamour.Attach your golden circle stickers to the fabric, placing them at regular intervals around the hem of your vest, up and down its middle cut, and around its arms. The top of your costume can be decorated with other accents, like fake gems.Attach each accent using hot glue.

Step 6: The gold sequin fabric needs to be cut.

Attach it to the leggings with hot glue. You can cut any pattern you want into the sequin fabric, like wavy lines or straight lines. The gold sequin fabric needs to be long enough to fit around the waistband of your leggings.

Step 7: Attach the gold sequin waistband to the leggings with hot glue.

Place the leggings on the work surface with the front facing up.Attach the leggings with hot glue.Press the front of your cut, gold sequin decorative waistband into place.Do not use hot glue to burn yourself. If you want your gold sequin waistband to be on top of the leggings, you need to repeat this process on the reverse side.

Step 8: If desired, add accents.

If you find your pants to be a little plain, you can accent them the same way you did the top of the costume. There are gold dot stickers on the side of each leg.You could use your glue attach to other decorations, like fake gemstones.

Step 9: Pick up costume making materials.

The character of genie is easy to understand. You're going to use a blue cloth to mimic Genie's classic blue skin tone.Blue body paint can be used if you want exposed parts of the body. You'll need a jumper, a long-sleeved shirt, paper, scissors tape, and a scarf.

Step 10: Take the vest off of your costume.

Use your scissors to remove the bottom half of your blue shirt.Use your scissors to cut a straight slit at the middle-front of the shirt collar. This will allow the shirt to open in the middle. It will look like you have blue arms, if you leave the long sleeves of the shirt attached.

Step 11: The vest needs to be decorated.

A line of golden dot stickers outline the vest portion of your long sleeved vest. These will be attached to the inside of the shirt collar, bottom hem, center slit, and shirt sides. The blue and gold theme will make you imitate it.You can make your own designs with the long sleeved vest. You could use golden tape to add yellow up-and-down stripes to the vest.

Step 12: Special features should be added to the jumper.

The blue fabric on the jumper makes it look like your skin is blue.Left and right lines should be added to the jumper just below the waist and at the cuff of each pant leg.The golden bands that Genie wears will be mimicked by these.Adding golden dot stickers to your jumper can make it more flashy and rich in appearance. You could put up an up-and-down line of stickers between your golden taped portions. It is recommended to use a jumper for small children.Children are more susceptible to sickness if they are playing in a costume without a shirt. If you plan on using body paint to color your upper body, you may want to forgo the jumper and instead buy billowy blue pants, like harem pants. You can make golden wrist cuffs by cutting a strip of gold colored paper and taping it around your wrists.

Step 13: You can make a simple headpiece.

You can make a fancy headpiece from your gold sequin fabric.Cut a length of gold sequin fabric with your scissors that is long enough to fit around your forehead.Attach the gold sequin fabric to the circle with hot glue.

Step 14: The ponytail holder is an I Dream of Jeannie.

Use your scissors to cut the toilet paper roll in half.Take sheer fabric and cut it into a strip of 5 cm by 1.5 cm.If you wind it around the cardboard of the tube, you won't be able to see the gap in the center.Attach the ends of your fabric to the toilet paper roll with hot glue. There is excess fabric underneath the wound fabric.Cut another piece of the same fabric 2' wide by 3' long and fold it into a triangle so it forms the longest side.Attach your fabric to the inside of the toilet paper roll with hot glue. You glue the first one on the opposite corner of the roll. You can drape the fabric from the inside of the tube to the chest if you want, but first you have to slide hair into the ponytail holder.

Step 15: A simple topknot or high ponytail can be used for boys.

Boys don't want headpieces or ponytail holders. You can simply gather their hair into a ponytail, like in Aladdin. If you really want to look like genie from Aladdin, you could shave your head and leave a ponytail behind.

Step 16: There should be a lamp and other accessories.

You can find suitable genie accessories, like a lamp, wrist and ankle cuffs, necklaces, earrings, and so on, at a thrift, second hand store, or dollar store.Adding these to your costume will make it look more authentic. You can spray paint teapot gold as a substitute for a lamp.A plastic teapot is a good choice for younger children.
