How To Make a Hanging Rope Shelf

A hanging rope shelf can be used to display vases of flowers, potted plants, and decorative knickknacks. For instance, nylon or raffia, use whatever type of rope you like.To hang from the ceiling or wall, make a single shelf or a stack of shelves.

Step 1: Take a look at the area where the shelf will hang.

Take a measurement from the ceiling to the wall where you want the shelf to end.You can double each piece of rope if you add that number by two.If you want to make knots in the rope, add eighteen inches to the number. If you want your shelf to sit five feet from the floor, you need three feet of space between the ceiling and where the shelf ends.If you add eighteen inches to the number, you get six feet. Two pieces of rope are 712 feet each.

Step 2: You can use a paper guide to drill four holes.

A piece of paper is cut into a square with one and a half inches on each side.To mark where you will drill, place the paper on the end of the board and mark a dot at each corner. If you want to cut your own wood plank, you can go to a local home and building supply store.

Step 3: Sand, paint and distress your plank.

You can leave your plank as is.If you want to sand your plank, start with coarse sandpaper and work your way up to fine grade. The plank can be painted with any medium. When it is almost dry, Distress it by using contrasting coats of paint, and wiping the top layer with a damp cloth. You can either paint the whole board in a fun accent color or just the edges of the board. If you want the wood grain to show,Dilute the paint with water.

Step 4: Attach the hooks to the ceiling.

Take note of the distance between the holes. To mark those places with a pencil, use that measurement. There are screw eye hooks in the ceiling.Attach the hooks to the sheet rock with anchor bolt inserts.

Step 5: The rope needs to be secured to the ceiling and shelf.

The rope needs to be pulled through the hooks. The rope should be adjusted so that both sides hang the same. The plank has four holes.Under the plank, tie an overhand knot on each of the four rope ends.Attach tape around the rope ends before you pull them through the holes. If you want the rope tails to be even, you can use shears to even them up.

Step 6: Purchase equal-sized boards.

You can buy wooden shelves cut to size at a local home and building supply store, or cut your own.Depending on how many shelves you want, use two to five boards. You may want five boards that are 28 cm deep and 48 cm long.If you want, you can sand and paint the boards. You can use paint for the rope and boards. Before installing, let it dry.If you are using thin plywood, you may want to glue the two pieces together.

Step 7: Use a marked paper as a guide to drill four holes in each board.

There is a piece of paper on each side.To mark where you will drill, place the paper on the end of the board and mark a dot at each corner. If you want to practice, you should practice on scrap wood. You can protect your work surface with scrap wood underneath the shelves. You should use a drill bit larger than your rope.

Step 8: Take a measurement of where the rope will hang.

You can either hang your rope from the ceiling or the wall.If you want the shelves to end above the ground, you have to take a measurement from where the hanging hardware will go.Double that number. Then add eighteen inches for each knot. Each shelf has a knot under it.The shelves will hang in a four-foot area if the ceiling is eight feet high and you want them to end on the ground. You have to double the number four to get eight feet. You need to add 7.5 feet to each length of rope if you have five shelves. For each length of rope, you want 15.5 feet.It is better to end up with too much rope than not enough. You can trim it off later.

Step 9: Go through the holes with the rope.

The rope should be folded so that the bent half is where the rope hangs.Below each hole, tie a knot. It's important to leave the same amount of space between each shelf. If you want to make tassels, cut the rope ends.If you want to hang heavy items on your shelves, screw on cable locks. If your rope is thin, you can twist it together to make larger strands if they fit in the holes.

Step 10: The shelves can be hung from screw hooks.

To find the best place to hang your shelves, use a stud finder or knock on the wall.Measure between the width of your holes and mark where you started.Attach screw hooks where you made your marks. Two hooks are needed for each length of rope. Before decorating your shelves, check the weight limit on the hooks you use.If you knock on the wall, it should sound solid. There is a wood plank or stud that can be used to screw the hardware into.
