How To Map a Folder to a Drive Letter in Windows

Are you not interested in browsing through long paths?You can map a drive letter to a long path.This will save a lot of time.A long path like D:DocumentsJohnLetters to the drive letter X can be mapped.

Step 1: There is a command prompt window.

If you open the command prompt as a default user, you won't be Administrator.The reason will be explained later.

Step 2: To map your folder to a drive letter, use the SUBST command.

"D:DocumentsJohnLetters" is an example.

Step 3: You can try it by opening a windows explorer window.

You can access your mapped folder directly from the newly created drive letter X:.

Step 4: To un-map the drive letter, type SUBST X.

/D

Step 5: All mapped drive letters will be reset when you restart your computer.

If you want your folder to be automatically mapped when your system starts, you have to put the SUBST command in a batches file.This is not covered, however advanced users can use the windows task scheduler.

Step 6: Use the account that issued it to execute the command.

The user who originally issued the SUBST command is the one who created the mappings.When you open a command prompt asAdministrator and execute the SUBST command, "John" will not be able to see any mapped drive letters because the mapping was created for "Administrator".As a default user, you need to open the command prompt.Make sure the command is executed under the user account when using the task scheduler.

Step 7: From your Windows desktop, open My Computer.

Step 8: From the Tools menu, click Map Network Drive.

Step 9: You can assign a drive letter to a folder in the drive box.

You will be able to change the name of the drive.

Step 10: If you want to find the computer in the folder, type the server and share name into the box.

Step 11: You can click the finish button.
