How To Open RAR Files on Windows

There are many different types of data compression.RAR is one of the files types.You will have to extract the contents of the file in order to use a compressed data file.WinRAR and WinZIP are two of the most used programs that do this.

Step 1: You should check the PC for 32- or 64-bit versions.

You will need to know what version of Windows you are using.If you want to see this information, open a file explorer window.A new window should open if you click on the left-hand side of the window and hit theProperties button.This is the next step.Click the Start orb, right-click the computer, and selectProperties to open a new window.To the right of System type, it should say 32- or 64-bit.This is the next step.Click "Start," right-click "My Computer," and then select "Properties." A new window will pop up with the General tab already selectedUnder the System subheading, you should see Microsoft Windows XP.If there is nothing else nearby, you are using a 32-bit version of Windows.You are running a 64-bit version of windows if it says 64 next to it.This is the next step.

Step 2: You need to download and install WinRAR.

Go to the WinRAR download page with any internet browser on your PC.Depending on the type of processor your PC is using, there are two different download options.Click the blue button if you are running a 32 bit version of Windows.Once finished, follow the instructions on the screen.Click under the blue "Download WinRAR" button if you are running a 64 bit version of Windows.The install instructions can be found on the screen.

Step 3: To open the file, select it from the menu.

WinRAR can be opened after the installation has finished.You can open the archive in the upper left-hand corner.From the window that opens, navigate to the location of the files you want to open.The icon for RAR files may look like 3 small books stacked on top of each other.Click the file to open it.

Step 4: The files are inside the RAR.

You will need to extract the files in order to use them once you can see them inside the RAR file.Click the top file, hold down the Shift key, and then click the last file on the list.The files will be selected in the RAR.There is a button at the top of the window.A small window will open.To get the files to a location, use the box.You can either double-click the folder or use the + icons to expand it.When you're done, click the "OK" button on the bottom of the page and highlight the folder you want to extract the files from.You have opened your first file.

Step 5: You can download WinZIP from the page.

Go to the WinZIP download page with any internet browser on your PC.

Step 6: WinZIP can be downloaded and installed.

There should be two numbers in the bubbles.To download WinZIP, go to the right of the number 2 bubble.Once the download is finished, follow the on-screen instructions to install the program.

Step 7: WinZIP can be launched.

WinZIP can be opened after the installation has finished.You can find it either on the desktop or in the Start menu.Once the program starts, there may be a window that opens in front of it that asks you to buy or use the evaluation version.

Step 8: To open the RAR file, you have to select it.

A new window will open if you select "File" and "Open" in the upper left-hand corner.There is a drop-down menu in the lower right-hand corner of the new window.Select "All files(*)" from the drop-down menu.This is from the list.The program will only display files in.ZIP format.The files can be seen and selected in the search window if the setting is changed.Go to the folder you wish to open.To view the contents of the file, double-click it.

Step 9: The files are in the RAR file.

To select individual files, hold the key as you click on the file you want to extract.Click anywhere in the file window to select all.Left-clicking will open the context menu.Under the UnZIP/share tab, select "UnZIP to PC or Cloud" from the options.In the window that appears, choose the destination folder where you want to save the unzipped files, and click "UnZIP" to extract the selected files or folders to the chosen location.
