How To Pack a Bike to Ship

Step 1: You can get a bicycle specific box from your local bike shop.

A brand new box can be purchased for a small fee if the shop is not able to give you a free used box.Pre-used boxes have shipping labels on them.

Step 2: The handlebars, pedals, seat post, and front wheel need to be removed.

You may need a small wrench to remove the pedals, but most parts can be removed by hand.After attempting to remove the pedals, shift the bicycle chain onto the small chain ring.To unthread, turn the right pedal counter-clockwise and the left pedal clockwise.Remove the seat post and seat from the unit.Retighten the seat post bolt after it's removed to prevent it from falling out.All loose parts should be set aside.

Step 3: Put a block of wood between the front fork dropouts.

The block cannot be easily removed in order to protect the forks from damage.

Step 4: Put the fork and stem in a different position.

Step 5: Wrap the bike's tubes and loose parts

You can use bubble wrap, cardboard tubing or an appropriately padded packing material.The bicycle and its parts will be protected from being scratched, nicked or otherwise damaged during transit.

Step 6: Wrap the handlebars and other loose parts of the frame with tape or plastic ties.

Step 7: Wrap the bike around the box.

To prevent the bike from rattling or shifting inside of the box, use additional shipping material to fill any empty space.

Step 8: The box should be sealed and shipped per instructions from the local service.
