How to Paint Melamine kitchen cabinets, how to paint it and tips for painting it.
If you have watched any decorating shows, you will know that they paint the doors of old kitchen cupboards.It seems like a quick, easy, and inexpensive change on television.It is a very cost effective undertaking that takes a long time.I think the time and effort invested is worth the results, so here are my steps for how to paint kitchen cabinets.
1.The first method is to use a commercial paint sprayer.The advantage of Melamine paint is that it is designed to adhere.It is easy to clean.It takes a long time to dry.
2.Door and Trim paint can be applied by roller.I've had good success with this method.
I added cabinets to the kitchen before I started.I replaced damaged doors as well.If you cannot find an exact replacement, don't worry.Your old door design is likely to be obsolete.You should look for a replacement that is close to the original style.The differences will not be noticeable when they are all painted.
The preparation of the surface is important no matter what method you use.Don't cut corners on this part of the job.
2.The doors and front cupboard edges need to be washed.Don't leave grease or dirt on the surface.
4.Sand the surfaces lightly and then rinse them with warm water to remove detergent and dust.
1.Each door should be sprayed with an even coat of melamine.The spray gun should be pointed off the side of the door to start the paint flow.The spray gun will point off the door on the other side if you sweep the entire door.When the gun is turned on and off, big blobs of paint can land on the door.Try to keep the spray gun nozzle an even distance from the surface.The paint can be distributed evenly.If you are new to using a paint sprayer, you may want to do a few practice runs on some scrap wood first.
2.Each door should be sprayed with an even coat of the Melamine paint.You can wipe up drips with a damp rag or a brush.One coat of paint works best.
3.You will need at least two coats to get a smooth coverage.Don't spray on each coat.It takes a long time for the paint to dry, which is one of the drawbacks of using it.Allow a day or two to allow the paint to dry completely before applying the next layer.
4.I did not paint the inside of the cupboards but I painted the edges to match the doors.The same method was followed for the edges and doors.
I painted the center panel blue and used a foam roller before putting the hardware on the doors.I applied a coat of silver glaze after that dried.
1.B.I.N primer Sealer can be used to paint the doors and cupboard edges.The door and trim paint will adhere to the Melamine cupboard door surface.I use an inexpensive brush when painting with B.I.N because it is not a water cleaning product.
2.When the undercoat is dry, apply your first coat of Door and Trim acrylic paint using a mohair blend roller.Let it dry.
4.For total coverage, repeat step 2 and 3 once or twice.Don't touch up the paint before it dries.As the paint dries, it is designed to smooth over the surface.Leave it be if you apply the paint.
5.There are optional silver panels.I used a small roller to paint the part of my cupboard doors that were silver.This took about 4 coats.I wiped the edges of the panels with a damp cloth.
6.There is an optional glaze.The stark contrast between the top and bottom doors made me apply a glaze to the tops.I mixed the glaze with the bottom cupboard paint and the water.I used a piece of cheese cloth to wipe the glaze off the top cupboard doors and edges, being careful to avoid the silver panels.
I want our bathroom cabinets to be the same color as those shown going from white to black.How does rolling on the paint work in all the areas?
If the grooves are not very deep, you can still use the roller.The paint will get into the grooves if the roller is deep.If they are too deep, I would use a brush to paint the grooved areas first and then do the flat areas with the roller.If you are afraid of not being able to get the paint on smoothly, you can try mixing some Floetrol with it.Good luck with your project!
