How To Paint vinyl flooring.

A popular type of flooring is vinyl. It is easy to clean, but can be dated over time.Give your flooring a fresh coat of paint to give it a modern look.Prepare the surface with a liquid deglosser in order to get a professional finish.Apply 2 coats of primer and then paint. This will make your vinyl floor shiny and new.

Step 1: You can test the paint in a spot.

Paint a discreet section of your vinyl, such as under your fridge or in a corner. If you like it, you can see how it looks on the vinyl. To make the paint look realistic, use an art paintbrush. To get the most accurate understanding of how it will look, leave the paint to dry for a few hours.

Step 2: Attach the trim to the floor with painter's tape.

The paint and primer can't be seen around the trims.Attach the pieces of tape to the trim.Place pieces of tape over the trims until they are completely covered with painter's tape.Purchase painter's tape at a hardware store.Once you have finished taping, remove the tape. The trims are easy to peel off.

Step 3: The vinyl has a shiny surface.

It is easier for the primer to stick to the vinyl if the shiny surface layer is removed.Put a lot of pressure on the sandpaper and rub it back and forth over the vinyl.Work your way across the floor until it looks dull.Use a new piece if you lose your roughness. If you are sensitive to dust particles, use a dust mask.

Step 4: Dust and dirt can be removed with a damp cloth.

To squeeze out excess water, lightly wet a cloth.Pick up all the dust from the vinyl by wiping the damp cloth with circular motions. It helps to make your paint job look smooth.Microfibre cloths work well for this job.If you notice the cloth is covering the vinyl, rinse it in water and then dust it.

Step 5: Put a thin coat of liquid deglosser on the floor.

The paint and primer will stick to the surface created by this.To apply liquid deglosser to the floor, use a paint roller with an extendable handle.Start at the opposite corner of the entrance and work your way back to the door. This prevents you from being trapped in a corner of the room.To create a smooth finish, apply the liquid deglosser with long strokes.Liquid deglosser can be purchased from the paint section of a hardware store.

Step 6: The deglosser needs to be dry for 12 hours.

The liquid deglosser has time to adhere to the vinyl.Pets and children are not allowed in the area to prevent the wet surface from being marked.Leave it to dry for another 12 hours if the vinyl still feels sticky.

Step 7: There is a thin layer of primer over the vinyl.

To apply the primer, use an extendable roller brush. This helps to create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to.Use the same rolling technique that you used when applying liquid deglosser to make sure you don't get trapped in a corner of the room.If you can't get the paint to go against the trim, use a paintbrush.Any kind of primer will work.

Step 8: The primer should be left to dry for 12 hours.

This makes sure that the primer is completely dry and won't smudge or be marked when you paint over it.If the smell of the primer is strong, open the windows to increase the air flow in the room.If you live in a dry climate, the primer may take a little longer to dry.If it is dry, tap the floor with your finger. The surface needs a little more drying time if it still feels sticky.

Step 9: Allow the primer to dry before applying another coat.

Apply a thin coat to the entire floor after dunking the roller in primer.Use long strokes to create a smooth surface. You will end up with a much more professional result if you apply 2 coats of primer.

Step 10: Paint the floor with paint.

The paint is hard-wearing and not easily marked, which is crucial for a flooring surface. The extendable roller can be dunked into the paint with a mixing stick. To make the surface look professional, roll the paint onto the floor with long strokes. This isn't long-wearing and will quickly get marked from people walking on it, so avoid using chalk paint. If you want to make your flooring look like stone, use grey paint or brown paint.

Step 11: The paint should be left to dry for 12 hours.

If the room is dirty, close the windows and doors.Pets and children are not allowed in the room to walk on the paint before it is dry.

Step 12: If you wish, apply another layer of paint to the vinyl.

Leave the paint as it is if you are happy with it.Roll on another layer of paint if you want a richer colour. This will make the surface look better.Allow the paint to dry for 12 hours or until it is dry to touch.
