How to prevent and remove grass stains is one of the tips.

Brown spots are hard to deal with. There is a patch of grass that is dead or dying when you think you have done everything right. There are many causes of brown spots in lawns.

To get to the bottom of the situation, you have to investigate. The brown spots in your yard are caused by something.

It is easy for us and our pets to damage lawns. There are some common causes of brown spots.

Sharpen your blades in the fall and spring. If the mower is cutting cleanly, it's time to examine the grass.

If your mower blade is set too low, it can cut the grass too short and cause damage.

Lift your mower blades and smooth out high spots by digging up the sod, removing some of the soil underneath, and replacing it.

Chemicals can cause dead spots if spilled. It can burn the grass if it is unevenly applied. When sprayed on the grass blades it can burn your lawn.

If you have a driveway, pour chemicals, fuels, and sprays on it, not on your lawn.

Dogs are the most common culprit, but large birds and other animals can also cause urine spots. The urine can cause your lawn to turn yellow in spots, sometimes with a bright green ring around the edges where the nitrogen in the urine acts as afertilizer.

Poor soil can cause brown, bare areas or moss in your lawn.

Push the screwdriver into the soil.If it doesn't go quickly, your soil is very dense. If you want to incorporate organic matter in the soil, try aerating and top-dressing.When you aerate, it is a good idea to look at the plugs to see how the lawn changes over time.As you amend and improve your soil, keep in mind this.

I was puzzled over a brown patch for weeks before finding an old piece of buried lumber under the grass.

The remedy is to poke around a little to see if there is anything underneath the sod.

Water tends to run off slopes, taking grass seeds and young shoots with it, and leaving bare ground or dried out areas behind.

To increase water absorption, aerate your lawn.If the slope is steep, consider building terraces.

Large trees or shrubs are more likely to win the battle for water. The area under trees is difficult to grow grass in.

The lawn needs one inch of water per week from either rain or irrigation.Dry spots are more prone to being damaged by water.

If your soil doesn't drain well, keep an eye on dry, sunny spots.Make sure your lawn is watered evenly.

Cool-season lawns can go quiet during the heat of summer while warm- season lawns don't.If your lawn has a mix of grasses, there will be brown patches as some areas go dormant while others stay green.

It's normal to have seasonal dormancy, but make sure your lawn is strong and healthy.

If you have eliminated all of the above causes, it is time to move on to the more serious diseases and pests that plague lawn grasses. The most common culprits are:

Thatch is a build up of grass blades that can choke out healthy grass.

When your sod pulls back from the ground like a carpet, it's a sign of grubs.

Pull back the sod and look for fat, white curved worms. The damage to the lawn can be caused by more than ten per square foot. You can find grub control products at your garden center.

In warm-season lawns, chinch bugs are a common summer pest.

You should be able to spot the small black and white adults if you inspect your lawn closely and look at your shoes as you walk through the grass. There are products that can be used to target them.

Look for insects and grass blades that are eaten.Birds and wasp feed on pests in your lawn.

Brown patch and other diseases thrive in moist conditions in the summer and spring. They may be circular or irregular brown spots, or you may see a pattern on the blades that is dying/thinning out.

To make your lawn less inviting to fungus, increase air circulation and sunlight as much as you can.If you want to diagnose the disease correctly, you need to know the size and shape of the damage, as well as the amount of watering, fertilization, mowing, and sunlight.Take a sample of the affected grass to your local extension office for analysis.

Thanks for the information.I wanted general lawn-care tips so I could maintain my lawn myself after my sod was installed.

I bought a home with grass. The grass is brown.I was wondering if I could replace those patches or something else.I would like to put fresh soil if I replace the pacthes. The new patches wont die if I use black cow.

I have been working on my back yard for a long time and the same thing happens over and over again. It happens in the same spots over and over again, we have dogs that are collared and walk outside the yard, and we also have oak trees.

For a week, water them daily.Get some liquid nitrogen and mix it with a steroid in a 55 gallon container and then go around the trees and bushes.Plants will grow when it stimulates the roots.

I get brown patches every fall and get green in the spring when I plant a new grass, but I still do the same thing.I used weed killer to kill the grass and its roots but they still have the same problems and it spreads all over the yard gradually. What should I do?

I had dead spots in the lawn for a long time. They will destroy a lawn in a short time, if not treated, they will return year after year.Home Depot has a product that will get rid of them.Fleas,Fireants, and most other lawn pests are killed during the entire season.

There are green spots in the grass.A lawn care place said it was deer urine. It is getting worse.Do you know how to stop deer from urinating on our grass?I thought it might be deer urine because neighbors don't seem to have it.

What can I do to get my lawn back?

There are real light green circle patches in my lawn that are not brown spots.I don't have a dog.Is it from deer urine?Thank you.

We have new sod fescue grass almost a month and recently the grss get thin and brown. There are many different spots. How do Ivent from the fact that our water irgration is correct? The gardener mentioned that the place has the same problem with water.

My brown patches look like small areas of grass.I haven't used anything but milorganite and the spots showed up before I used it.Could it be a disease? Thanks.

When I cut my grass using a riding mower, there are light spots that cause the grass to turn brownish yellow and then die out. This doesn't happen when I use my push mower.I looked to see if they were leaking gas, but didn't find anything. What else could it be?Is there a way to raise a riding mower that is too low?

When I put Scotts Turf Builder on my lawn, I didn't have to worry about weeds or brown spots appearing in circles.I made sure the settings were correct when I used the Scotts spreader. It can be used any time and won't burn the grass.I don't know what to do.

After applying the recommended fertilization for my zip code, my grass looked great. The grass grew so fast that it didn't look like I'd mowed it two days after I bought a new lawnmower. The dumbest mistake I made was lowering the blades on the lowest level. The grass died after I SCALPED my yard. When I water every other day, I apply a Bayer fungicide for brown spots every morning. There are new blades of grass springing up in my yard.Do you have any advice, such as reseeding?I replanted dead areas in the yard a year ago and the new grass looked great until I removed it.I had to have a huge pine tree removed because it must have been too acidic for the soil.

The insect killer made by Spectracide doesn't work.I spray a bottle every month. It says it works for a couple of months.I have a dog and I want to make sure he doesn't have fleas or ticks.I don't have grubs as far as the mower blades, they changed service 4 months ago, so if it's dull blades I cannot do anything about it.I sprayed lawn disease and my sprinklers are on every day.I read one of the comments and will try the cornmeal if it doesn't work.

I had my lawn aerated but didn't have a section overseeded. The area I did not overseed was brown. We haven't had any rain in over a week, so I began watering it and have not cut it yet.The lawn was thick prior to aeration.Any suggestions?

The lawn was reseeded a year ago.It was more weed than lawn after using Scotts seed. When the grass got to 3.5 inches, the lawn food was added.Immediately after, fertilized it using Scott's instructions. The grass was ok after I pulled the weeds from the seed.I bought a spray weed killer that claimed to be safe for grass. The lawn was nice for a while, but now it is dying off faster than I can fix it.If you dig up a patch of grass and smell it, I bet most of the problems are the same as mine. You can smell cat urine and it is all over the place.I went to the 99 cent store and bought a few dollars worth of cayenne pepper and sprinkled the perimeter of my yard because the home depot has an animal deterrent for 15 bucks that lasts about a month. It allows you to have a little revenge on the cats at the same time.A cat is being watched.

Last fall, the sod was planted. It was really well done. The grass turned grey in spots after it came back strong in the spring. It is spreading all over the yard. There is also a mushroom problem. No improvement after using some antifungal spread and only water in the morning. We could definitely use some help.

I have low spots in my yard that have always had good grass, but with all the rain we have been having, it is getting bad.The grass is not looking good and it is getting slimy on the ground. Is it okay to put top soil on that and then put grass pads?I need to hear from someone. Thanks!

Within 6 hours of receiving it, I laid 2000 square feet of Kentucky blue grass. After laying the grass, water it for 2 hours on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.Half of the 25 rolls turned brown.Do you not know what happened? Thanks for the advice, Al.

There are tips for the lawn.I am not a pro, but this all comes from my many years of trial/error/reading and learning how to get my own lawn, and some neighbors who hire me to maintain theirs, looking thick, green, lush and well, better than any MLB ballpark!

The first tip is to mow your lawn short when it is cool outside. As it gets hotter outside and stays hot, short lawns will get burned. As the seasons get hotter, you should mow higher. You can mow your lawn higher when outdoor temperatures are high. When it will be hotter than 90f, mow it even higher. If you want to protect your lawn and your soil from getting cooked, raise your blade by half inch, or as much as one full inch as the seasons get hotter and you will be able to adjust the height at each wheel. It doesn't really need hot, it needs sun, water and warmth.Your lawn/roots/soil is not a good thing if you have a full sun temp over 80f.

Do not de-thatch your lawn.If your thatch layer is more than a half inch thick, it's time to de-thatch.Only remove some of the layer.During the growing season, a thin thatch layer protects your soil and grass roots from heat and also feeds the lawn and soil as it breaks down!A thicker layer is good for winter protection, but make sure you thin it out when the weather warms up again next year.

Do not aerate your soil!It should only be done once every 4 or 5 years if you really hate your current lawn and want to replant. It is not a good thing that aerating allows more air into the soil to allow it to be absorbed and dried up quickly. It can allow bugs to get under your lawn more easily. It's not a good thing.

Do you have bare spots? Is that the case? What do you think about divots? You should buy a few bags of good soil. There is a bit of a difference. You can level your yard out with your own two hand and one good steel rake.Wait! There are bare spots from animal urine, can't get anything to grow in that one lousy spot?If you already have that big bag of lawn soil you just purchased, get a spade shovel and dig up some of the bare spot and discard, so you don't have to fill it with fresh soil.It is easier to get the urine out of a small spot of dirt than it is to water it.Why don't you waste time with the sad soil?Keep the spot watered for the next 14-21 days by dropping some seed on it.POOF!The bare spot is gone. That's right.

If your clippings are short, do not use a bag on your mower, those clippings help feed and protect your lawn, which is a good thing! If your lawn is long or has a lot of weeds, bagging a weedy yard is a must.

Do not over water your lawn.If your area is hotter than 80f, twice per week is fine.Over watering leads to rot, mushrooms, and a place for bugs to live happily, among other issues you don't want!By watering less, your grass will become more heat and drought tolerant.

Cool season grass seeds will only grow when it's cool outside.Between, say, 55F-65F!If you seed it and it doesn't grow, it's either too hot or too cold outside.Don't cry!If it was too cold out, you don't have to worry, as the seed will eventually grow and you will not waste your money.I have had temp fluctuations happen to me many times. It got too hot out too quickly for it to emerge, but I waited and POW!It grew up!That's right.

In the northern states, early fall is the best time to seed and reseed.Even better than planting in the spring. The best time to seed is between August 28 and September 28 in some areas. It works well in the southern regions.

Check your local weather forecasts to see what your area will be like over the next ten or so days and seed accordingly. Will it be warmer than 55f for at least ten days? The best time to get that seed down is if that is the case.

There is a tip about when to feed a lawn. There are times in the early and late spring and summer when it's great to put down feed, weed-Prventers/killers and bug preventers. When I apply feed just after the last frost in early Spring, it helps to get that lawn fed and green again after winter.I apply a Scotts brand lawn food with Crabgrass preventative, making sure my lawn is all moist, than I wait about 48 hours and water it daily for the next 5 days.I have been doing that to my own lawn for the past 3 years and have not seen crabgrass since I lost my entire property to CG in 2011.In the middle of May in my area, I will apply a second lawn food with an added weed killer in it and also add a bug killer to it since I had a huge bug issue two summers ago.I have not had any weeds in 3 years. The Feed/Weed Kill/Bug Kill can all work together.Just as long as you don't have St. Augustine grass.St. Augustine and some weed killers don't work well together.I use a different bug killer than the one I used when I waited another 8 weeks to get another feeding down onto the moistened lawn.It helps keep the Japanese beetles away. There were no Jap Beetles.I add a regular lawn food/turf builder to my lawn around mid-September and water it for 5 days.I use a winterizing food around early November for a final feeding.I am not overdoing it on the feedings/weed preventers/killers and the results are amazing. In the last 4 years my yard has gone from a mix of weeds/bare spots/twenty different shades of green/CG damaged/Grub damaged eyesore to a thick, green carpet than anyone would be more than happy to lay down or roll around on all day long!

I hope these tips can help you get the lawn you really want to see out your window and under your feet.!

I live in Central Florida and have Zoysia grass. My lawn is being cared for by a company that ignores the problems I am having.A few months ago, I saw a deep purple spot in my lawn.I thought someone poured something on my lawn, but now it's all over my grass. The grass is lower in those areas as it turns purple, brown, and dies.I know it's not a problem, but they always say it is.These patches cover the areas that have always been beautiful.Do you know what they are and how to fix them?Thank you, Sandra.
