How to Process Carob is a 7 step process that will show you how to process carob.

There are carob trees in North America.I was able to get a shopping bag full for free from the streets of Los Angeles and process about 3 pounds of powder in one weekend. The stuff is easy to process at home.A regular blender and a low temp oven are just as good as a dehydrator or a high powered blender.

It's a good idea to clean your pods. They are probably out in the world collecting dust and smog.I cleaned them with a vegetable wash.I only picked thepods that were still on the trees if they were healthy and shiny.Unless you want to keep your carob raw, boil them for 20 minutes.

Thepods can be slit with a knife, longways to shuck them. You are not going to be eating the seeds. You can eat thepods in this state as a snack.

The seeds are hard and uniform. They can be used in bean bags to make an emulsifier for smoothie and ice cream.

Once you have cleaned and deseeded your pods, grind them up.I used a knife for this step.If the sugar is still damp from boiling, it can carmelize from the heat of Blending. You end up with little sticky balls of sawdust, which will blend into powder. The groundpods can be dried in the oven at low temp or in a dehydrator. The dryer makes your powder smooth. It is important to not rush this step.

Once you have dried gound Pods, whip them up in small batches in a blender.I drank about one or two cups at a time.

I ground anything that was too big to fit through the sieve. This will help get the lump out. That is all about it!

You can make a delicious raw halvah with the following ingredients: orange juice, carob powder, Tahini, honey, and salt. When solid, cut into cubes.

The smoother the powder, you said. You can spread it on a framed screen or leave it in the dehydrator. They won't dry unless a storm rolls in.

Dehydrating mushrooms for long term storage made them overcook all too easily.Put them in an unplugged dehydrator and leave them there for the night.I believe that carob Pods could be treated to prevent over cooking.

I looked up the carob tree on the internet and it can give you some help distinguishing it.Although similar in appearance to the honey locust, the black locust lacks that tree's characteristic long spines branched on the trunk, instead having the pairs of short thorns at the base of each leaf.Don't eat if there are thorns on the leaves.Make sure that what you are collecting is food.
