How To Reduce Doorbell Sound

If the loud ringing sound coming from your doorbell is making you have headaches, it's time to take action. Most old school wired doorbells and intercoms don't have a volume control. There is no way to change how loud the chime is when someone presses the button outside of your door.Don't give up hope just yet, you may be able to muffle the sound.Digital volume controls on wireless doorbells make it easy to adjust the volume.

Step 1: The chime can be found on your wall by looking for a plastic cover.

There is a chime located in your home if you have an old school doorbell. There is a plastic box that is roughly 10 by 15 cm.The boxes are usually located near the door, close to the ceiling, in your living room, kitchen, or some other common area. The chime is likely to come out of the grill above the buttons on the intercom.Next time the doorbell rings, pay attention. The chime is built next to the "speak" and "listen" buttons if it sounds like it's coming from the intercom.Any doorbell that uses your home wiring is a wired doorbell. There is a wire running from the doorbell to the chime inside. The doorbells don't have volume control settings.

Step 2: Put duct tape over the openings of the chime.

The sides, top, and front of your chime should be inspected. The chime will have a vent or opening to let sound out.The easiest way to lower the volume of the doorbell is to put a piece of duct tape over it.This will make the doorbell sound a little quieter.Duct tape can be put over the grill to reduce the volume. You won't be able to use the intercom. There are not many good solutions when it comes to lowering the volume of the chime.

Step 3: For a more aesthetically pleasing solution, tape acoustic foam over the chime.

You can buy acoustic foam online.Cut the foam into strips that match the opening or vent on your chime. The foam can be cut with scissors or a knife.Next to the opening, peel off some double-sided tape and place it on your chime cover. If you want to cover the vent or opening, lay the foam over the tape.If the chime is really loud, you can cover the entire plastic cover with acoustic foam. The sound will be reduced even more dramatically. The sound is amplified by the openings on the cover, but it comes through the thin plastic case.

Step 4: Muffle the sound with a chime cover.

A chime cover is a decorative piece of art designed to obscure the plastic chime sitting on your wall.If you get a solid chime cover that doesn't have a vent, they will lower the volume.Buy a chime cover online if you measure the length, width, and depth of your chime.Hang it over the box on the wall.

Step 5: If the doorbell isn't turned on, turn off the fuse.

The chime can always be turned off.To keep your doorbell from going off, flip the switch to the off position and look for the fuse labeled "doorbell" or "chime".It is a decent way to keep the doorbell from ringing if it is really driving you crazy. If the chime doesn't bother you when it goes off at night or early in the day, just flip the fuse every night before you go to bed.If you want to keep the chime off permanently, put a small sign near the doorbell that says "please knock" to let people know.Sometimes the doorbell can be connected to another electrical system in your house, such as your porch light or entryway outlets. If there are other electrical systems on the same circuit, you may not be able to do this.

Step 6: A doorbell can be installed with a wireless doorbell.

If you want to resolve the issue, buy a wireless doorbell. Most brands have volume controls for the chime.Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install a wireless doorbell in your home.Your chime is wired into most wireless doorbells.Remove the cover, take the old wires out, and attach the new doorbell to the chime after you turn the fuse off. Then, you replace your old doorbell with a new one.Ring is the most popular brand of wireless doorbell, but there are plenty of other options. If you don't want to mess with the electrical wires in your home, you can always hire an electrician.

Step 7: Open the app or control panel.

Every doorbell has volume settings. If you have an app on your phone or computer, open it to control your doorbell. If you have a digital control panel in your home, you can access your settings.Call the company that you bought the doorbell from if you can't figure it out.The only brand that doesn't have a volume adjusted doorbell is Nest. You can change the volume of the speaker by pressing the lower volume button on the control panel.

Step 8: Pull up the settings for your doorbell by selecting your device.

There are a lot of devices you can choose from. You can see your speaker, the app settings, or something else.To open the settings for the doorbell, you need to select or highlight it.

Step 9: You can lower the doorbell by adjusting the volume.

When you open the settings for the doorbell, look for a volume control.Lower the volume of the chime by moving it to the left.Keeping the app open will allow you to make adjustments while you test it.A lot of wireless doorbells have a silent function as well.If you don't want the doorbell going off late at night, you can open the app or settings on the control panel and set the volume to 0.

Step 10: Test your doorbell to make sure it sounds right.

Go to your doorbell once you have adjusted the volume. You can hear how it will sound from inside if the door is left open.Press the doorbell to hear the chime.Turn the volume up if it is too quiet.Turn it down even further if it is still too loud. One person can stay inside while you check the doorbell from outside. This will give you a better idea of what the chime sounds like.
