How To Run a Windows Longhorn Virtual Machine in VMware

Would you like to try out the operating system that was never released?Longhorn can be run using VMware.

Step 1: You can download the Player or the Workstation.

We will need a virtual machine program to run Windows Longhorn.It's best to use VMware Player as it has the best compatibility for Windows Longhorn.You can use it too.Visit my.vmware.com to download the VMware Player.

Step 2: The install process requires you to go through it.

Run VMware once installed.The steps focus on the player, so the steps may be different for it.

Step 3: Click to create a virtual machine.

The.iso file is needed to install it.

Step 4: This is the directory to go to.

Then you can download "Microsoft Windows Vista".

Step 5: You can create a virtual machine with the Installer Disc image file.

You can browse to the downloaded iso.

Step 6: You can choose Microsoft Windows or Windows XP Professional.

There is no way for Windows Longhorn to be supported.

Step 7: Let's name your machine.

It can be called something like Windows Longhorn.

Step 8: You can give Windows Longhorn a certain amount of hard drive space.

It's good to have something like 30GB or more.

Step 9: If you want to put the memory higher, click here.

If you have 8GB of memory, you can give it 4GB.x86 operating systems do not support more than 4GB of RAM.You don't want to give all the RAM on your computer.This will cause your computer to slow down, and make it switch to the page file.Half of the memory you have, but no more than 4 gigabytes.If you don't edit the configuration file, it will not boot.

Step 10: You can open the folder Virtual Machines if you go to Documents, or My Documents.

Step 11: Go into the folder with the name of your Virtual Machine.

Step 12: You can find the.vmx file.

We are looking for the.vmx file, you will see a lot of files.If you can't see.vmx on the end of the files, you need to do this.If you are on Windows, you can use the Tools in the folder we are currently in.Click the View tab, then select the option called "Hide extensions for known file types".Click Apply if you don't want to check the box.Click the Organize button if you're on Windows Vista/7.If you're on Windows 8, click the View tab in the ribbon, then click Options and do the same as in step 4.

Step 13: Click on the.vmx file if you want to open it.

Select Notepad if you're on Windows.Don't check the box that says Always open this file with this program.If you want to use this application for all.vmx files, click More Options, and then choose Notepad.You have to click OK in Windows 10.

Step 14: Look for the text that reads 12 and change it to 7.

Save and leave.

Step 15: If you want to install a Windows Longhorn virtual machine, go back to VMware.

Everything should start up.
