A pagan/Wiccan altar is a sacred space with spiritual objects used for meditation, spells, ritual, divination, prayers, visualisations and connecting to deity.It's an important part of neo-paganism.You can make one yourself.
Step 1: Decide if you want an indoor or outdoor altar.
The altar can be anywhere.Some people take portable altar items into their garden.You have a close connection to nature.You can have an indoor altar if you don't have a garden.Pick a room to have your altar in.The private room in the bedroom is easy to relax in.
Step 2: The direction of your altar should be considered.
The traditional direction of Christian churches and masonic temples is east, which is where the sun rises.Many Pagans pick North or North-East as a popular choice.A lot of rituals begin with the person facing the North.Your altar can be in the direction of your element.Air for east, fire for south, water for west, and center for spirit.
Step 3: There is a place to set up your altar.
If you want a permanent altar with a lot of heavy items, you can keep it on a table.Even though you can't have candles under the wood, other places are drawers, bookcases, trays, tree stumps and windowsills.If you live in a busy household, an altar box can be used to keep your objects private.You can put the items on top of the box when you use them.Pick a place that feels right for you.Use your intuition.
Step 4: The style of your altar can be chosen.
Maybe you will use Celtic deities if you are influenced by Celtic paganism.If you have native American beliefs, you may choose some of their symbolism on your altar.Consider how your altar reflects you and your beliefs.
Step 5: Pick the items you want to use for the goddess.
The moon, divine feminine, right brain, unconscious and night time are represented by the goddess side.A semi large candle with a color you think represents the Goddess is an item used for the goddess.Cold colors like blue, green, purple and silver are used.There is a statue of the Goddess.Depending on what goddess calls you, this can be Isis, the moon goddess, or statues from a Greek goddess like Hestia.Totem animals of the goddess can be hare, cat, owl or other lunar animals.There is something that may represent feminine elements.A bowl of water, a seashell, cauldron, sea glass or mirror, are all green/brown coloured objects.There are tools that can be used with a crystal ball.There are some objects that are special to you.
Step 6: Pick out the items you will use for the God side.
The god side is a representation of the divine masculine, sun, elements fire and air, and daytime, conscious and left brain.You might want to put a semi large candle on the God side.A statue which represents the God, such as the green man, Lugh, Osiris, Herne, solar imagery, or masculine totem animal is an object for the 2 masculine elements.If you have a wand for fire than your athame would be for air, so don't hurt animals to get it!There are yellow/white/silver colors, Athame, Boline, wand, incense, feathers.There are any divination tools out there.There are some objects that are special to you.
Step 7: Decide what to put in the center of the Altar.
You can have a deity that you work most with.You can put the ones you are working with if you don't know your deity.The element is spirit.White, purple, and rainbow colour.Candles and crystal can be used.Something powerful and important is what you should choose.If it is symbolic of all 5 elements, put the book of shadows on the goddess side.A candle is red, blue, yellow, or green depending on the sign of the zodiac.
Step 8: Add more items.
You could also have something similar.This can be used to sprinkle on the altar.You can make it yourself.There are crystals.There are tarot cards.These are good for meditation because they have pretty images on them.A box with a spell.If you have a big altar, you can put a small box on it.There are Spell objects.Witches ladders, witches bottles, puppet magic, etc.There are two types of Talismans and Amulets.The jewellery is magickal.Anything meaningful and divine to you.You could hang a charm, dreamcatcher or witches ladder above your altar for good energy and protection.
