Birds will attack windows during their breeding season.They think another bird has entered their breeding ground when they see their reflection.If you want to prevent birds from attacking your windows, you can reduce the reflection in your window pane, set up precautionary measures to scare birds away, or block the landing platform on the window.You probably need a temporary solution since most birds will give up after a few weeks.
Step 1: If you want to deter birds, hang a plastic drop cloth over your window.
If you want to remove the reflection from the exterior side of your window, hang a medium-weight plastic drop cloth or sheet.Purchase a plastic drop cloth and either nail it into the top of your window frame with small nails and a hammer, or use double-sided tape to stick it in place.The plastic shower curtain is a little lighter than the drop cloth.It may blow off if you live in a windier area.If you value the natural light coming in through your window, this is the most efficient option.
Step 2: If you want to reduce reflections, cover windows with film.
Adding artistic flourish to a room by using stained glass, mosaic, or pattered window film is a great way to reduce reflections.You can buy window film online or at a craft store.Attach it to the interior side of the window.Use a credit card to smooth the film out and use a razor blade to cut the excess film off.Before installing window film, clean your window thoroughly with a cleaning solution.Birds can see their reflections if you choose a white or translucent window film.
Step 3: You can remove reflections by taping bright paper or newspaper to the window.
To completely remove the possibility that the bird will see their reflection, tape sheets of bright paper or newspaper to the inside of the window.The bird will not be able to see their reflection when they look at the window.It will reduce the amount of light that enters your room.If you live in an area with a lot of other homes, this is a great option.You can probably take the paper off once the bird stops attacking.If you don't care about the light coming in through your window, this is the best way to deal with birds.
Step 4: You can install window screens on your windows.
The mesh frames on the window screens keep bugs out of your home.They will prevent birds from seeing themselves in the mirror.Purchase screens based on the width of the window and slide them in.Pre-framed screens that expand and stick inside the bottom of your window frame can be used if you don't have slots.If you don't have slots for window screens on your windows but want them to look good, you'll need to hire a contractor to install them for you.The tension on the screens keeps them in place.Birds will look like they are attacking the mesh in rare cases.This is usually just a bird trying to find something to build a nest.Birds will simply give up after a few failed attempts if you get wire mesh screens that can't be clipped by a bird's beak.
Step 5: Plants can be put on the window sill to remove the landing platform.
If you don't live in a windy area and have a large window sill on the exterior side of your windows, put flowers or plants on it.This will prevent birds from landing on your screen and give them something else to look at when they fly past, which will reduce the odds that they see their reflection in the first place.If birds attempt to land on the flowers or plants, you can simply remove the plants and use another option.
Step 6: Rope or string can be hung from the window to stop landings.
The width of the rope, twine, or string should be at least 0.5 inches.If you want to hang the twine over the exterior side of the glass, you have to open the window.You can use heavy-duty tape to tape the rope or twine.It will look like birds are moving in the wind and blocking the window so this will deter them from landing.The size of the bird attacking your window will affect how many lengths of string or twine you use.For larger birds, put a string once every 4–5 inches (10–13 cm) for smaller birds.
Step 7: You can keep birds off of your mirrors by hanging grocery bags over them.
If birds are attacking your vehicle's side mirrors, slide a plastic grocery bag over them.Wrap each mirror with a rubber band to keep the bag from blowing off.The mirror will be blocked from bird attacks.You can prevent birds from jumping on your vehicle by turning the mirrors inside whenever you park it.
Step 8: Birds can cause damage to your vehicle if you don't have a car cover.
A car cover protects vehicles from the weather and dust.You can buy a vehicle cover online or at an auto supply store.Pull the cover over your car when you park it.Birds will not be able to land on your vehicle if you block them from doing so.If birds see their reflection in your vehicle's paint, this is the only other option.
Step 9: Place a decoy owl on a window.
A decoy owl can be purchased from a home supply store.If you want to scare birds away, put the decoy owl on the exterior side of the window.To keep birds from getting comfortable with the statue, move the owl every few days.It won't work for some birds that have seen decoy owls before.
Step 10: To confuse birds, layer aluminum foil around the window.
There are sheets of aluminum foil inside your window.Attach another strip of foil to your window by sticking the edge between the window and the frame.Birds that approach the window will be scared by the light reflected from the aluminum foil.
Step 11: You can hang a flag near your window to deter landings.
A flag or windsock can move with the wind.Birds will be discouraged from approaching your window because of this erratic motion.You can buy a flag or windsock from a store.Attach the brackets for a flag or windsock to the frame of your window.A windsock is a conical sheet of fabric that catches the wind and lets you know which direction it is blowing.You can usually find the brackets for windsocks and flags with the item you purchase.If you do not live in a particularly windy area, this is not a good option.If you consistently have problems with birds attacking a single window, it is a great option.
Step 12: You can close your windows during the day by installing shutters.
You can either hire a contractor to install the shutters for you or you can do it yourself.Measure your window and buy shutters that fit the frame to install them on your own.Attach the individual shutters with the screws that came with them by installing brackets on the inside of the frame.During the day, shutter your windows to keep birds out.If you install the shutters yourself, it will cost between $300 and 700 per window.$400-1,000 a window is what a contractor will cost if you hire them.The cost depends on the type of shutter you choose and the size of your window.If you live in a hot area, you should have shutters.They keep heat out when they are closed.Birds will be scared away if the shutters flap in the wind.
Step 13: Bird feeders and wind chimes are strategically placed to keep birds away.
Bird feeders attract birds, so hang them away from your windows.The sound of wind chimes will scare birds away, so hang them close to your home.If birds are attacking windows on a porch with plenty of room for a wind chime, this is a good option.The wind chime may attract birds if it is quiet.
