There is nothing worse than putting on your glasses and realizing that you can't see clearly because of the scratches on the lens.If you have glasses with plastic, you can use common household products to fix small scratches.You can use one of these methods to fix your plastic glasses.
Step 1: If you want to know where the scratches actually are, you need to clean the surface of your lens.
Make sure to use a cleaner that is specifically for glasses.You can get it at an eye glass store.If you have bought glasses there, they will give it to you for free.
Step 2: Apply scratch removal to your eyes.
There are many products that can be used to remove scratches.Put a non-abrasive toothpaste on the lens.Rub the scratch with a cotton ball and rinse it with water.You may need to repeat the process a few times if the scratch is deep.Baking soda and water can be used to make a paste if you don't have toothpaste.When you have a thick paste, put baking soda in a bowl and mix in small amounts of water.When you think the scratch is gone, Rub the paste on the same way you did the toothpaste, and rinse it off.
Step 3: If you have excess scratch removal, wipe it off.
If you can't remove it all with a rag or cotton ball, rinse the lenses with cool water and wipe them dry.
Step 4: If toothpaste or baking soda doesn't work, try another cleaner.
Try buffing the glasses with brass or silver polish and a soft rag.Rub the polish on the glasses and wipe them off with a soft rag.Continue until the scratch is gone.When using a cleaner that isn't made for glasses, be careful.It is not known what the cleaner will do to the frames.
Step 5: If there are still scratches, apply a scratch filling product.
If you still have scratches on the surface of your plastic lens, you can apply a product that will fill them with wax.Rub the product onto the lens and then wipe it off with a clean area of the cloth.It will allow you to see through your glasses, but you will need to apply it weekly.Turtle Wax and Lemon Pledge are two types of products that work best for this.
Step 6: Put your glasses back on!
You should be able to see better after your repairs.
Step 7: Make sure your glasses are plastic, not glass.
The method can only be used on plastic glasses.It is a method of last resort, as it will remove all the coating from your plastic lens.If all the coating is gone, your lens will no longer have any protection and you will be more likely to get scratches in the future.Only this method can be used if you want to remove the anti-reflective coating from your glasses.You can see through your lens again if you remove the scratches to the coating.Before you buy new glasses, it's best to try this method.
Step 8: You should clean the surface of your plastic lens.
You can use a cleaner to clean eyeglasses.Cleaning the surface will allow you to see the scratches.
Step 9: A glass etching is designed for glass art projects.
The abrasive can be purchased at any hobby or craft store.Glass etching compounds have hydrofluoric acid, an acid that eats through almost anything other than plastic.It will eat through any coating but leave the plastic lens completely intact.If you don't already have rubber gloves, buy them if you do.
Step 10: Before you apply the abrasive to your plastic glasses, make sure you put on your rubber gloves.
You will need a small plastic container to set the lens in while they are covered in the abrasive.This container will not be used with food after this project is completed.
Step 11: Use a cloth or a cotton ball to apply the glass etching.
Let the lens sit in your plastic container for a few minutes.
Step 12: Use a soft cloth or cotton ball to wipe off the abrasive.
The water should be cold.All items that came in contact with the abrasive should be thrown out.
Step 13: Put your glasses back in.
You should be able to see through them now that they don't have anti-reflective or anti scratch coating.
