How to wire a combo switch with an outlet.

Ground fault circuit interrupter is a protection device against electric shock which is used in outdoor and watery areas such as bathroom, kitchen, laundry etc.

In our previous wiring lesson, we showed how to wire a GFCI outlet with different protected loads. There are two outlets in a GFCI outlet and one outlet in the combo GFCI switch and outlet. We will show you how to use the additional wires on the back of the switch to control the different loads.

It's important to differentiate between a combo switch outlet and ordinary switch.Line and neutral terminals are narrow and wide, respectively. In a normal combo outlet for line terminals there is a break away fin between the upper and lower terminals. The line should be connected to the one Line terminal via break away fin in a normal combo switch-outlet.Both terminals are connected to each other. The first i.e.Load can be connected through the switch if the neutral wire is connected to the wide blade of outlet.

We are going to show you how to wire and install a GFCI combo switch and outlet to protect the light switch, ordinary outlet / receptacle, light and switches and use the switch in the combo to control the outlet in it.You can read the basic difference between the two in the previous post.

The light bulb connected to the first wiring diagram is protected from damage by the ground fault circuit interrupter.

In the second wiring diagram, the lamp is connected to the line terminals. The main power supply is direct. The light can be controlled by the GFCI switch, but it is not a protected load.

The ordinary outlet / receptacle is the same as the above wiring as it has been connected to the load terminals of the GFCI.

The ordinary outlet is not protected by the ground fault circuit interrupter as it has been connected and wired to the line terminals.

Light and ordinary outlet are connected to the load terminals of GFCI in this special case wiring diagram. The light ON/OFF operation can be controlled through the GFCI switch. Both loads can be done this way.Light bulb and outlet are protected by the ground fault circuit interrupter.

The ordinary outlet and light bulb are connected to the load and line terminals of GFCI.The light bulb is not protected by the ground fault circuit interrupter.

The switch in the combo switch has been used to control the outlet. The outlet can be turned off via the upper switch in the combo.

The upper wire must be connected to the line terminal of GFCI while the second wire should be used to connect the incoming line. The ground wire should be connected to the main board. The switch in the GFCI combo can be used to control the outlet.
