How To Wire a Thermostat

Depending on the temperature in the room and the thermostat setting, the furnace and air conditioner can be turned on or off.The thermostats are installed the same way.A new or improved thermostat can help increase energy efficiency.These tips can be used to wire a thermostat.

Step 1: The manufacturer's instructions can be read.

All tips, suggestions and pictures provided in the instructions should be reviewed before wiring a new thermostat into your wall.Special directions can be given for your model.

Step 2: The electricity must be turned off to the thermostat.

The breaker box has switches that correspond to your furnace and air conditioner.It's a good idea to turn the electricity off to avoid electrical problems.

Step 3: The old thermostat and wall plate need to be taken down.

The thermostat will come off the wall plate.Remove the screws that hold the wall plate.

Step 4: You should keep a record of how the wires are connected to the thermostat.

The old thermostat had wires connected to it.If there are stray wires that aren't connected to anything, label them.Ignore the colors, except for your own purposes.Professional installations are usually color-coded, but not all thermostats were wired by them.

Step 5: Don't let the wires fall into the wall.

Tie or bundle the wires.Tape them to the wall if they don't stay in place.To complete the wiring installation, wires that fall into the wall must be fished out.

Step 6: If there is a replacement wall plate, put it up.

The holes in the wall plate should be marked with new holes.To make sure the wall plate is straight, use a level.The holes need to be drilled for the new plate.The wall has a new plate on it.

Step 7: You need to connect the wires from the wall to the thermostat.

Refer to the notes you made to connect them.Follow the manufacturer's instructions if you want to twist the wires.

Step 8: Attach the thermostat face to the wall plate

Push wires back into the wall and slide the plate onto it.It should be straight and flush against the wall.

Step 9: Electricity can be turned back on to the furnace and air conditioner.

The electricity to the items can be restored by flipping the switches in the breaker box.

Step 10: The furnace and air conditioner should come on when the thermostat is set to a certain temperature.

If the thermostat doesn't work, review all the steps.
