Yale University is an elite Ivy League school and was founded in 1701.Its total number of students is less than 12,000.The school accepts 6.3% of the applicants it receives, but it gets many more applicants than that.The admissions process is very competitive.If you want to be accepted, you need to find something that makes you stand out from the crowd, and honor roll and academic excellence aren't enough.
Step 1: If they are available, take AP or college prep courses.
College prep in high school can be difficult.Yale is an Ivy League school and admissions officers look for students who can survive a heavy course load.If you want to get into Yale, you need to take advanced placement and college prep courses so you stand out among your peers.If your high school has courses that are not found in most high schools, take them.If your high school has a language other than Spanish, French and German, choose Japanese or Mandarin.This will help you stand out.Don't take the easy option.You won't gain admission to Yale if you get a 4.0 in easy classes.Take something a little more challenging if you want to ditch the dodgeball class.
Step 2: Good grades are obtained by getting good grades.
Your high school academic performance will be the first thing Yale looks at.It's important to maintain a high grade point average throughout high school in order to apply to Yale.As an elite Ivy League school, Yale will examine your grade history from all four years of high school whereas less exclusive schools tend to weigh your performance in your junior and senior year more heavily.You should make sure that your senior course load reflects the rigor of your studies."Senioritis" is not something to indulge in.
Step 3: You can enroll in SAT orACT prep courses.
There are courses and programs designed to help you prepare for the SAT.These courses can help you figure out the best way to study and take the exams that will give you the highest score.These courses or programs can help you increase the speed with which you work through individual questions, or eliminate clearly wrong choices when you don't know the answer, in order to maximize your score on the SAT.You can take these classes for free or at a reduced rate at community centers and public schools.SAT Subject Tests are not required for Yale admissions.These tests can help distinguish you from the rest of the pack by showing your knowledge in a specific area.
Step 4: Make sure to schedule your exam dates.
You should pay close attention to the dates when you can take the SAT in your area and compare them to Yale's yearly application deadlines.If you plan out a schedule that maximizes your chances of scoring highly on a standardized test, you will have a better chance of getting into Yale.The application deadline for Single-Choice Early Action applications, where you agree to accept an offer of admission if it is made, is November 1.January 1 is the regular application deadline.If you want to be admitted to Yale, you need to take the SAT orACT in December.
Step 5: Take both the SAT and the ACT multiple times.
If you're worried about your score, take the SAT orACT more than once.A major part of your application package is your score on these exams.Since your time will be better spent strengthening other elements of your application, Yale suggests that you not take the test again if your score is already in the ballpark.There are no standardized test score cutoffs at Yale.The SAT scores for the most recent freshman class ranged from 2130-2400 to 32-36.The SAT and ACT general exams are not reported by Yale.You have to submit your SAT and ACT scores to Yale.Yale allows "Score Choice" reporting on the SAT subject test, meaning you can choose which scores you want to submit to the university.There is no evidence to support the idea that your score will go up after the second or third time you take the exams.Instead of trying to maximize the number of times you take the test, focus on exam preparation in the beginning.
Step 6: You can join an athletics team at your school.
The Ivy League schools don't give out athletic scholarships.You can show Yale that you are more than just a bookworm by engaging in athletics.A well-rounded individual who can balance multiple responsibilities is demonstrated by playing high school sports while maintaining high grades.If you excel in a sport in which Yale participates and your high school grades are above average, it is possible that Yale will bend some of the more stringent academic standards for admission to get desirable student-athletes to attend the school.While Yale is not known for its athletics program, the university has had some success in a number of sports.
Step 7: Students are involved in student politics at school.
Getting involved in student government in high school is a great way to show Yale that you are ready to take on leadership roles within that environment.If you want to be class president, vice-president or treasurer, you have to run.
Step 8: There are clubs at your school.
While joining clubs and group activities in school are great extracurricular activities on a college application, nothing is more impressive than a young student taking the initiative to found a group or spearheading a student project.Lobby your school's administration to allow you to start a new group in areas where extracurricular activities are lacking.Identifying other students that will participate and a faculty member who can oversee the group is important when taking this step.It will be easier to pitch the idea to the administration.
Step 9: Activities that help the community are what you should be doing.
Community service, charity, and public outreach programs are available to you.Yale is looking for intelligent individuals who will use their intelligence and ambition to improve their community.If you help improve your community during high school, you will show that you are the kind of person Yale wants in their school.
Step 10: Make a strong record of employment.
If you work a part-time job during your high school years, you will demonstrate your work ethic and personal drive to the admissions board at Yale.You can excel in many areas while working at a local restaurant, carwash or retail store.Make sure your job doesn't affect your grades or cut into study time.Being terminated from a position of employment will not improve your chances of admission.
Step 11: The admissions website of Yale.
Carefully read Yale's admissions guidelines and application requirements before applying.Before you put the application together, you should know what you need.
Step 12: Let the school know your status.
Mention anyone in your family who has attended Yale in the past.In the past, Yale has admitted that up to 25% of legacy applicants are admitted, compared to around 6-7% of overall applicants.Inform the school if you are a racial, ethnic, religious minority or a first generation college student in your application package.Yale has a diversity quota that they try to achieve and may give preference to those who have broken the mold to become the first person in their family to attend a four year university.

Step 14: Stay within the word.

Step 16: Purchase letters of recommendation.
Ask your high school teachers to write a letter of recommendation for you.You can provide a link to the Common Application website for teachers to submit the letters online.Yale strongly recommends that you ask your 11th and 12th grade teachers for recommendations, since they have taught you most recently and in more rigorous courses.You should have a resume, C.V., or list of accomplishments prepared for your teachers so that they can make specific references to things you've done or accomplished in the letter of recommendation.Recommendations that highlight your performance in class, as well as your energy, motivation, relationship with your classmates, intellectual curiosity and impact on your classroom environment are what Yale is looking for.The student should not have access to the confidential recommendations.Pick two teachers who know you well, think highly of your performance in the classroom, and can outline your particular achievements, because as such, be sure to.Asking for recommendations from teachers of different subjects is a good idea.If you have significant accomplishments in another field, such as music or research, you can ask for a letter of recommendation from a person who is familiar with them.Yale recommends that you only do this if it adds to your application.It should be called aSupplementary letter of recommendation.

Step 19: A mid-year report is required.
As soon as your first semester senior grades are available, you should ask your high school guidance counselor to submit a mid-year report.Yale wants applicants to maintain a high level of academic success throughout their senior year.
Step 20: Monitor your application.
Wait up to 3 weeks after you submit your application to receive an email from Yale.Instructions for setting up your account will be in this email.You will receive an email with the address you provided on your application.You can use your Eli account to keep track of which documents Yale has received and you can check on the status of your application.Notification for Single-Choice Early Action admission will be given in December.You will be notified by April 1 if you applied for regular admission.You may be offered an interview.You should accept if you are offered one.Not being offered an interview does not mean you won't be admitted.
