Is Gumout Fuel System Cleaner worth it?

Stack Exchange network includes Stack Overflow, the largest, most trusted online community for developers to learn, share their knowledge, and build their careers.

Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for mechanics and enthusiast owners of cars, trucks, and motorcycles. It only takes a short time to sign up.

Unless you have a legitimate reason for using it, don't.It is possible that the usage will make the symptoms go away, but they will come back again later.

If your vehicle required it, it would be listed in the recommended maintenance items list in your owner's manual.

How old is the vehicle, how many miles on it, have you had it regularly maintained, why do you need a cleaner in the first place?

If you need to try it, go for it and figure out what your problem is before dumping chemicals into your gas tank.

I've found that using Gumout or Berrymans B-12 every 3000 miles has been fairly effective at keeping my engine clean.

I decided to use SeaFoam when changing the oil on my father's car because I save it for oil change time.Sea foam is often used to clean the fuel system of cars, as it's easy to do and much more thorough than adding fluid to the tank.

After adding the Seafoam, I ran the car for a test drive and there was a huge amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust like a drag racer. The gunk in the fuel intake system was being removed by the SeaFoam.

After doing the Thunderbird on my Toyota Avalon, I added Gumout or B-12 every 3000 miles and did the Seafoam run after a small smoke smell.

Now, your mileage might vary based on your driving style and car type, however at the least have a look at Seafoam because it's used all the time for the crankshaft, fuel intake, and fuel system -- and on virtually all car forums that is the cleaner of choice.

If it's on sale, I'd add a can of Berrymans B-12 or Gumout.Make sure it's the fuel system cleaner and not fuel injector cleaner as the latter allows deposits to build up after adding it.

I will point out that if you're having fuel system problems, it's a good idea to get a new one. It's a must to go to a mechanic for the check engine light.
