Is it hard to dig up bamboo? How to replant Bamboo Shoots

If your bamboo is out of control in your garden, you may want to transplant it to a different area to stop it from spreading.

You might be moving house and want to take some of your bamboos to your new home to reestablish yourself in the garden there.

There are two types of bamboo. The clumping bamboo stays in a tight clump because the running bamboo's rhizomes spread out very quickly.

The amount of work involved is dependent on whether you want to transplant the whole plant or just take a piece of it and leave the main clump where it is.The root ball needs to be taken out of the ground.

Further information on planting, season, location and spacing, as well as tips on care of the plant, can be found here.

When bamboo is being shot, don't think about it.The best time to do this is in the early spring or late autumn when the growth has stopped.

The culms that are not too old are part of the clump. If you want to include healthy culms, I would recommend at least four or five, in a minimum clump size of 2ft.

The rhizomes are not tough enough to be allowed to dry out.During the transportation to their new home, they must be kept moist. You should have a sheet of plastic and a bucket of water with you when you dig so that you can wet the leaves when they become exposed.

The main clump is 1ft away from the soil cut with the spade or saw.If you are going to just take part of the plant, you should carry out the process on the side you take.

If you want to include the rhizomes that will be for the next year of growth, you need to know which direction they are running.

You should be able to sway the clump back and forth and use a spade to loosen the roots.

Don't forget to keep the root ball moist, the plant upright, and the leaves in the shade when you transplant bamboo. It's important that you don't let the plant dry out on a hot day.If you are transporting the root ball a long way, make sure to wrap it in plastic and wet it immediately.
