Is your accountant charging you for unnecessary 1099- NECs? What is a IRS form?

The IRS requires all payment processors in the US, including Venmo, to give them information about certain customers who receive payments for the sale of goods or services.

All tax servicing and documentation is done by our parent company, PayPal.If you have questions about taxes, read on.

Please review the Venmo User Agreement for more information about acceptable use of your business profile.

The total payment volume received by business profile account holders whose payments meet or exceed both of these levels is required to be reported to the IRS.

Form 1099-K will not be issued if the total payment volume received by your business does not meet or exceed the thresholds.

If your business profile exceeds the reporting thresholds set by the IRS, you will be asked to provide your U.S. taxpayer identification number and name.We will let you know when you log in to your Venmo account that you need to confirm your U.S. taxpayer status.Enter the requested information by clicking the link in the email or notification. If you haven't confirmed your U.S. taxpayer status and your account activity approaches the IRS reporting thresholds, restrictions will be placed on your business profile.Follow the instructions in your email and notifications to remove these restrictions.

Please review the Venmo User Agreement for more information about acceptable use of your business profile.

We will only send your form to the address we have on file for your business. The tax documents need to be postmarked by January 31st.If you haven't received your tax documents by February 28th, contact us to have them resent or update your address.

The dollar amount shown on your Form 1099-K is your total gross payments received for sales of goods or services that were received through your Venmo business profile for the previous calendar year.

Since the total amount reported should be the gross amount, refunds and returns are not excluded from it.

If you need to review the payments received through your business profile, we recommend you download an account statement from your Venmo account.Click here if you want to view your transaction history. You can't access your statement from a mobile browser.

We have to list the amount of card not present transactions received in Box 1b.

A card not present transaction is when a customer of a credit card company makes a purchase and the card number is not swiped at the time of the transaction.

All of your transactions are reported as "card not present" transactions in Box 1b.Box 1b does not mean that income was reported twice.

If the payments received through your business profile reached reportable thresholds before it was closed, a Form 1099-K will be issued.
