Ladder stitching.

A ladder stitch can be used to complete a project that requires an open seam.It can be used to sew stuffed toys or pillows.Begin sewing around the perimeter of the project with a sewing machine, and then finish the last one to four inches by using a hidden ladder stitch.

Step 1: Make sure the project is turned right.

A ladder stitch brings two areas of the hem together to match a project that has been sewn inside out.Ladder stitching will take place in the area you turn the project right side out.

Step 2: The project needs to be smooth.

The corners may need to be popped out with a sewing needle. You may need to stuff the inside of the project before sewing up the last part.

Step 3: The hem of the opening needs to be folded.

It should match the seam allowance on both sides. You can iron the open section if it doesn't stay turned inward very easily.

Step 4: The opening needs to be pinned closed.

If you can, hook your pin through the rough edge of the hem.It will be less likely to show your stitches later on.

Step 5: Make sure you thread your needle.

You will want to double thread it.Pull the thread through the eye of the needle.Pull it until the ends meet and the needle is in the middle. At the end, knot it several times.Pull the knot between two fingernails. The knot should be strong. The threads are below the knot.Leave a small amount of thread remaining.

Step 6: Continue where the machine stitch ended if you insert your needle inside the opening.

Pull it up through the machine stitch and make sure the knot is hidden between the folds of the project.

Step 7: The folds must be pinched together.

At the point where the machine stitch stopped, make sure they are perfectly matched.Think of the two folds as the right and the left side of a ladder.

Step 8: Place your needle through the right side of the fold.

The inside edge of the fabric is where the hem was folded. It prevents your stitch from showing on the outside edge of the fabric.

Step 9: You should make a one half to one cm ( 0.2 to 0.4 in) stitch into the inside fold on the right side.

Pull it through the center.

Step 10: On the left side, make a small, equalstitch through the inside fold.

Pull it towards the center.

Step 11: You should use the right and left stitches to form your steps.

Step 12: Continue until you get to the end of the machine stitching.

You can connect the stitches on either side.

Step 13: When you reach the end of your open section, pull the thread taut.

The ladder stitch you just made should be hidden by the thread.Pinch the thread and fabric where it emerges so that you don't lose any of the tension before securing the stitch.

Step 14: Bring your needle through the stitches on the inside of the thread to knot it.

Pull the needle through the loop.It should be secured several times.

Step 15: The end of the thread should be cut close to the fabric.

The ends should be Tucked into the fold.

Step 16: Done, it was done.
