Measuring for a Barn Door with Steves & Sons is a guide on measuring for barn doors.

We often have a waiting list for our barn doors, so you can save time by estimating your doors. This is easy since we price our doors in tiers. After you place your order, you will be asked to complete our Barn Door Measurement Form so that we can verify the exact size before building.Take care of these details when you are ready or three weeks before the door is scheduled to be completed. We can adjust your invoice if your door size falls outside of the first tier. All the details are taken care of by us.

Measure from the outside to the inside of the door openings.Measure across for the width and from the top of themolding to the floor for height.Depending on privacy needs, add 1 to 2 doors for overlap.

Measure the inside of the opening for width.Measure from the top of the opening to the floor.Depending on privacy needs, add 2 to 4 doors for overlap.

Depending on the style of hardware you choose, you will need a minimum of 6 inches between the ceiling or crown molding and the top of the door.In order for your barn doors to open properly, you must have enough room on one side of the opening for a single door and on the other side for double doors. The width of the door that you are ordering is equivalent to this space.Make sure to account for any objects that might impede the proper installation of your sliding barn door, such as chair rail, thermostat, outlets, light switches, vents, and any other objects.

Getting the right track length is the most import thing when ordering hardware.Track length should be twice the width of the door.If you have an odd-sized door, it is a good idea to order track that is longer. The track material order for a 39′′ door would be 7.You will not be in a situation where you are short if the tracks are cut to size.If you are sure, please let us know.

We will be happy to pre-drill our tracks for you upon request. If you are installing hardware on the wall, you need to know where your studs are.If you have a ledger board that the track will attach to, it is safe to order your track with pre-drilled holes. The spacing between the holes should be 16′′.
